Kyle Larson appeared set for his first career Bojangles’ Southern 500 win Sunday, but the Chip Ganassi Racing driver ceded his lead to Brad Keselowskion a late race off pit road and never recovered.

Looking for his first win of 2018, Larson had won both stages and led 284 laps, but a Jeffrey Earnhardt spin with 24 to go brought cars to pit road. Keselowski barely edged the No. 42 of Larson off pit road, held onto the lead through the ensuing restart and cruised to his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win of the season, instead.

“I knew the only real weakness we’d have throughout the race was a short run, and that‘s what it came down to,”  Larson told NBCSN following the race. “Hats off to everybody (on the team). Just came up a little bit short. It’s nice to show some dominant speed like that leading up to the playoffs. It stings, for sure, to not get a win at a prestigious race like this. I want to win the Southern 500 really bad.

“We had the dominant car. We proved it. We just came up short.”
