GM Trucks and SUVs Face Probe Over Brake Performance

GM Trucks and SUVs Face Probe Over Brake Performance The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a probe involving 2.7 million pickup trucks and SUVs from General Motors over concerns that their braking ability may fade over time, increasing the risk of crashes. According to NHTSA, 111 complaints have been filed with the agency about the problem, including nine reports of crashes. In addition, there have been two reports of injuries resulting from two of those crashes. No fatalities have been reported, NHTSA says. The probe may lead to a recall, but for now, it is considered an investigation.

Electric car startup Faraday Future announced Tuesday that it’s planning to furlough more employees due to its worsening financial condition, which stems from an ongoing battle with a Chinese investor.

Things Are So Bad at Faraday Future There's a GoFundMe For Employees

Just this summer, Faraday had apparently been on the cusp of launching pre-production of its high-powered FF 91 electric crossover, but the investor—Chinese real estate company Evergrande—has since reneged on an investment deal, according to the startup. Evergrande promised $2 billion to launch the production facilities, including an $800 million initial investment.

Faraday quickly burned through that cash, which precipitated the legal battle both sides now find themselves in, with Faraday trying to get clearance to seek funding from other investors to get back on its feet.

But while the company works to sort out the legal issues in court, it doesn’t expect a decision to come for another two-to-three months.

That means “we unfortunately must take further cost-reduction measures to deal with the current financial situation, which includes putting additional employees on furlough beginning this week,” the company said in a statement on Twitter. (The Verge, citing multiple sources, pegged the total number of furloughed employees at 250.)

Trump Says General Motors Should Pay Back Bankruptcy Aid, Proposes More Tariffs

Trump Says General Motors Should Pay Back Bankruptcy Aid, Proposes More Tariffs The president took to his Twitter account to propose a new 25 percent tariff on "cars coming in" from overseas. One day after General Motors said it will shutter five North American assembly and powertrain plants, President Trump rekindled his desire to slap a 25 percent tariff on all imported vehicles. On Wednesday morning, Trump referenced the Johnson-era "chicken tax" that has blocked foreign-built pickups and vans from American soil for decades—and successfully forced foreign automakers to build theirs in North America—with 25 percent tariffs.

Faraday confirmed that it has put additional employees on furlough in a statement to Business Insider, but the automaker did not disclose the number of employees that were affected. The automaker has struggled to build its planned FF91 electric SUV amid financial concerns.

“This was an extremely tough decision to make, and we recognize the emotional stress and financial strain this puts on people’s personal lives,” the statement said. Last month, a GoFundMe fundraiser was launched to pay for employee health care bills.

Ever the hopeful bunch, Faraday said its executive team has received interest from investors “around the world” and plans to continue on its long-shot bid to launch production of the FF 91. The company, very optimistically, says it hopes to resolve the funding issue within two-to-three months.

What Consumer Reports' Pros Know About Online Car Buying.
Consumer Reports buys about 50 vehicles each year to test. We often start the purchase process online, which can be a lower-stress option open to any car shopper. Here’s how you can do it. 1. Go to dealerships to test-drive the models on your short list. Make it clear to the salespeople that you are just trying out the car and don’t intend to buy that day. Take notes on each car you drive. Later on, go over the positives and negatives of each model and narrow down your list. 2. Once you’ve identified the model you want, contact nearby dealers. We find it best to do this by email to avoid a barrage of phone calls.
