What about all-season tires? Don't they offer good performance in all four season?

It's not quite that simple. The rubber used in all-season tires is formulated to work in colder temperatures than summer tires, but their glass-transition temperature is still higher than a dedicated winter tire. Unfortunately it has to be this way, because even as tire technology improves, no one has formulated a rubber that stays soft from zero to 100 degrees.

"In today's technology, that's impossible," said Rogers. "We're, I think, marching ever closer to it, but it still is unobtainium.

"I love to equate them to a candy bar," Rogers said, regarding all-season tires. "At room temperature, it's nice and pliable, it's just the right consistency to eat it and enjoy it. You put it in the freezer for an hour and now it becomes this rigid solid that you can break. It's brittle. If you put it on your dashboard on a warm, sunny day, well now it just kind of becomes a puddle of chocolate goo."

There's another problem with all-season tires, according to Joe Maher, a product manager at Continental Tire who specializes in developing winter tires. "A dedicated winter tire has to pass a legal standard in the US that sets a minimum traction standard in snow," he said. "An all-season tire, on the other hand, has a very, very low standard to be labeled all-season. Because of that, you can have an all-season tire that will be very close to a summer tire, or you can have an all-season tire that would be very close to a winter tire."

He told me all-season tire buyers generally want their tires to last longer, and durability comes at the expense of true all-weather performance.

"The focus isn't so much on treadwear as it is on a more well-rounded product that will give you that benefit of added safety through wintertime." So will the best winter tire be the one with the most grooves?

It used to be that simple, but things are changing, and you can thank advancements in tire rubber.

"The patterns of these winter tires are actually getting less aggressive than what they used to be," Rogers told me. "There's less open space. If you look at it, I would call it tighter-the tread blocks are closer together, things are more densely packed, which gives you more surface contact. The compound can do a lot more work now and you don't have to rely on the pattern."

"Studded tires really help when only on ice and usually when it's near freezing," Rogers said. "But the colder it gets or if there's snow or bare roads that are wet or dry, in all of those situations, putting studs in a tire versus the very same tire without studs, is actually at a disadvantage."

Many US states and some Canadian provinces prohibit studded tires on public roads, since the metal studs wreak havoc on dry road surfaces. Also, they're noisy and uncomfortable when you're not driving on ice or snow, and they're not meant for highway driving, since the studs can dislodge at higher speeds. Many of today's best studless winter tires provide the same level of traction as old-fashioned studded tires, with none of the comfort or legal drawbacks.

But folks who live in areas where roads ice over consistently might need the capability of a hardcore studded tire. Both Maher and Bourassa also told me a mid-tier studded tire can offer the same traction as a top-shelf studless snow tire, albeit with the drawbacks mentioned. There's less compromise if you go for a really high quality studded tire, like Nokian's Hakkapeliitta 9. "The studs are smaller, they're lighter, there's more of them embedded in the tire, and they're designed to work optimally with that tire," Bourassa said.
