What It Was Like Taking a Road Trip in a 255,000 Mile Jeep Powered By a $145 Engine

What It Was Like Taking a Road Trip in a 255,000 Mile Jeep Powered By a $145 Engine Over Thanksgiving weekend, I drove my 255,000 mile 1992 Jeep Cherokee 1,300 miles from Michigan to and from Virginia. It’s a vehicle whose engine I had blown up three years prior and swapped with a $145 Craigslist motor that was being sold out of a field. Here’s how that cheap engine held up in its first real test. “You get what you pay for” is a phrase I hear and ignore quite often, so after I spotted a cheap 4.0-liter Jeep engine for sale on Craigslist a few years ago, I wasn’t surprised to find the thing sitting in the seller’s lawn with no protection other than a coffee cup over the intake.

Head gaskets are thin wafers of material that seal engine blocks to cylinder heads . They contain pressure from combustion, oil and coolant to keep each in its own lane. That' s why a head gasket job is seldom just that. It usually starts around a grand and can easily hit several thousand dollars.

What is the Head Gasket and What Does It Do ? Most current head gaskets are made of multi-layer steel which is perfect for engines with higher compression such as diesel motors, for example. On conventional inline and V engines, fixing the head gasket doesn’t require pulling the engine out

I hate head gaskets.

That may seem like an impractical statement about a part that allows the two halves of your engine to work together, but it's a part that fails spectacularly, expensively and all too often in an era when little else fails on modern cars.

The head gasket is a piece of thin material with a lot of holes in it.

The wafer thin head gasket may look like an incidental part of your car's engine, but it keeps everything running.

The Story of the Porsche 'Black Widow'

The Story of the Porsche 'Black Widow' Yesterday, Porsche debuted a new 911 GT2 RS Clubsport in a charming black Martini color scheme. I don’t know how many recognize the car or the race it pays tribute to, but both were among the sketchiest I’ve come across. Research the Porsche 911 on MSN Autos | Find a Porsche 911 near you Back in 1976, Porsche debuted its new prototype race car, the 936. Weight was 1,543 pounds. The engine made 520 horsepower. Big turbo, no roof. A sketchy car by specs alone. Also on MSN Autos: Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport makes 700 hp for the track That’s before you get to how its first race went.

The cost to fix a blown head gasket can only be firmly determined once the head is off. At the least the head will need to be surfaced to flatten it At this point if I lost a head gasket I might walk away from the car, I could call in a favor and potentially do it myself, but not sure that’ s worth it for my cars.

What is a head gasket ? A head gasket has one of the trickiest but most vital jobs within a car’ s engine. It is the seal between the engine block How to fix a blown head gasket without replacing it . Taking too long to spot the problem will hit your wallet hard with expensive head gasket repair costs .

It seals the engine head, where the valves reside, to the engine block where the pistons live. It prevents compression, combustion, oil and coolant from escaping or mixing with each other in the channels running between the two major assemblies of the engine.

When even a small part of the head gasket is breached, or "blown," your car will run poorly -- if at all -- spewing white or blue smoke from the tailpipe and burning through a lot of oil, coolant or both.

The repair is to replace the gasket entirely, which involves removing about half of the engine to get to it. And when you've invested the labor to tear down the engine that far you often address other things like valve reconditioning, timing chain replacement, water pump service, or intake and exhaust gaskets. That's why a head gasket job is seldom just that. It usually starts around a grand and can easily hit several thousand dollars.

And what exactly is a head gasket ? Well, Mackenzie, I'm glad you asked, because head gaskets irritate me to no end. There are no cheap head gasket repairs, not if you do it right. They are a major tear down So let' s learn why the head gasket is still with us, why it ' s so important, and why it ' s such

Head Gaskets on the little TU engines are not that hard to do compared to a lot of cars, it also lol that' s nearly as bad as saying " why does it cost so much to replace the big end bearings?" Some garages may want to give the cylinder head a skim just to make sure it hasnt warped, but I would
