It's the Land Rover Discovery 's 30 th birthday so rather than sending over some birthday cake and balloons, we sent James Batchelor instead to look see how much the beloved off-roader has changed in five-generations. From its early days as a no-nonsense 4x4 to becoming the epitome of the posh

Land Rover celebrated the Disco's 30 th anniversary at Goodwood. We revisit the first one to see why it was such a hit. The engine choice was either Land Rover ’s new direct-injection 200Tdi diesel or the 3.5-litre Rover V8 that had started life 28 years earlier as a General Motors Buick engine in the US.

A new Land Rover is not every day. The attention was correspondingly high when the British pulled the cloth from the Discovery at the IAA in September 1989.

After all, the last premiere was 19 years ago. Back then, they had put the first Range Rover to the side of the original Land Rover, serving two extremes. Because while the comparatively old-fashioned Land Rover was primarily designed as a workhorse and adventurer, the Range Rover raised the off-road vehicle to the aristocracy and established itself as a luxury limousine with an extended range of action.

On this day in 1989, Land Rover created a phenomenon. The Discovery – previously code named 'Project Jay' – was one of the wildest production models unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show that year , but nobody could have predicted the impact this ostensibly niche British vehicle would have on the

Swiss Army Knife on Wheels

Both cars worked and reached their respective target group. But in between there was a huge gap in which the competition from Asia and America has spread with the first SUV. In order not to go completely empty there, Land Rover launched the Discovery as the third series. And because the pressure was high, the British had stepped on the gas: number three started at the fair in 1987 and was only two years later at the trade fair and a little later on the street:

resulted in a kind of Swiss Army Knife on wheels, says the site instructor and expedition leader Dag Rogge. With the Discovery it was pretty much everywhere in the world: with its two rows of seats plus the side folding seats in the trunk, it was spacious and flexible. With the large windows and the portholes in the roof, it is also clear and overall fairly indestructible. "The Discovery was a car that worked just as well on an expedition as it did when shopping."

Mercedes-AMG's GLB35 is a sprightly SUV headed for the US It's cool in non-AMG form, but a little extra vim never hurts.

The Discovery soon took over from the Defender as the Land Rover of choice for the Camel Trophy, for example. This gruelling endurance event tested adventurers to their very limits. A special Camel Trophy edition was even sold in Japan - though the canoe was not included.

With the “Disco” through every adventure

Initially it was only available as a three-door car and only a year later with its own access to the rear. The basic version cost around 45,000 Deutschmarks, the 4.52-meter-long Discovery was initially equipped with a four-cylinder diesel of 2.5 liters and a meager 83 kW / 113 hp or a V8 petrol engine with a displacement of 3.5 liters and 108 kW / 147 hp offered.

Even though the “Disco” is still digging through every adventure today, it is more of a leisurely ride on the asphalt: even the V8 cannot achieve more than 164 km / h. However, you sit so high and steer so easily that you hardly want to go faster and prefer to enjoy the «disco» fever with a slow beat.

How diverse the Discovery really has had to prove over the years in numerous spectacular expeditions and PR campaigns can be read in the chronicle: It has crossed the jungle on the Amazon, as well as the Madagascar wilderness or the Siberian snow desert. It was the competition vehicle in the advertising rally of a cigarette manufacturer, towed a 110-ton road train through the Australian outback as a tractor and was used as a rolling command center for the Red Cross's disaster relief efforts.

How the 2020 Land Rover Defender Lives Up to Its Legendary Off-Road Status

How the 2020 Land Rover Defender Lives Up to Its Legendary Off-Road Status The all-new Defender has the tech and stats to be the most capable Land Rover in years. The all-new Defender even outdoes the Jeep Wrangler with higher ground clearance, deeper water-fording ability, and larger breakover and departure angles. Now that Land Rover has resurrected one of its most recognizable models with the all-new 2020 Defender—and returned it to the U.S.—the retro-meets-rugged SUV looks to take up the torch of its legendary off-road forefathers.

The Land Rover Discovery has been raising the bar for all-terrain capability and everyday versatility for 30 years . To continue the celebration of three decades of adventure, Land Rover has revealed the new Discovery Landmark Edition. Taking the well-appointed SE as a starting point

Twenty years of Discovery ! The family owns a Range Rover Sport. From 30 September 2019 Spotify will no longer be supporting the InControl Apps access. As the dominant preferred access by customers it will be available to customers via Smartphone Pack where installed.

And when the one millionth Discovery was built in 2012, the anniversary model drove on its own axis from the factory in Solihull, Great Britain, along the old silk road to the big party at the trade fair in Beijing - and of course mainly used side routes. He even feels at home on the water, as a Discovery in Lake Geneva, which was converted into a swimming car, proved.

Faster generation change

While Defender and Range Rover are true endurance runners, the British set a faster pace in Discovery and go faster with fashion: Already in 1998 they revealed the second generation. The first airbags for the driver and front passenger came as a premiere in a segment that no one called SUV at the time. And to relieve the customer of the fear of an offside adventure, there was an electric hill descent aid two years later.

2004 the British pulled the cloth from number three and took the first big step towards a conventional car. The design was still classic, but the construction was comfortable: for the first time the Discovery was no longer built on a ladder frame, but got a self-supporting one Body. And electronics could also make the rural area a breeze for laypeople, because it prepared relevant vehicle systems for different surfaces. The series celebrated its 20th birthday with the debut of the fourth generation, and in 2016 the discovery number five made its debut, switching to a self-supporting aluminum body.

The circle closes at the IAA 2019

The Discovery has changed significantly over the generations and is now more devoted to everyday life than adventure. For example, the current model is the first and so far the only car in which the seats can be flipped with a smartphone app. But he has preserved the genes of the cross-border commuter - and is now even giving them back to his progenitor. Because the British present a new Defender on its basis at the IAA in Frankfurt, exactly 30 years after the debut of the Discovery - and thus close the circle.
