The BMW idea—which has been the basis of an astounding 15 patent applications in the last month alone—is an electric machine that appears to be based on the chassis, batteries, and transmission of the C Evolution scooter. Like the C1, the C Evolution is expensive and slow-selling, but unlike its predecessor it represents a form BMW remains committed to, staking its claim as a serious player in the electric bike field.

"We're testing here on Monday. For this test, we won't have the complete M-Bike yet, but we will be using some components from the M1000RR. These include the winglets, for example," reveals Bongers.

At BMW, Michael van der Mark has to get used to some innovations. "The brakes are different for him because we're using a different manufacturer," notes Marc Bongers. BMW has been using Nissin brakes since the 2019 WSBK season. Michael van der Mark worked with Brembo brakes for years.

Electric Vehicles are Too Damn Expensive

Electric Vehicles are Too Damn Expensive The average Josephine on the street can’t afford to step into most electric vehicles on sale in the U.S. today, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has admitted. “Our cars are not affordable enough,” Musk said during his second-quarter earnings call in July. “We need to fix that.” Electric cars and crossovers remain far too expensive to be daily commuters for the middle- and working-classes, who in congested urban areas, at least, may be turning to e-bikes instead, an electric segment in which U.S. sales spiked 92-percent in April and 137-percent in May, according to Bicycle Retailer and Industry News.

The spring elements of the BMW also come from the industry leader Öhlins. "The suspension elements are the same. So he knows the adjustment options. The electronics are completely new territory for him. And of course the chassis of the motorcycle. We have to adjust the motorcycle ergonomically so that he feels comfortable," remarks Marc Bongers.

If the weather cooperates, the newcomer tests some M components.

The BMW manager is concerned about the weather: "It looks like it should rain on Monday from noon. Let's see. Michael starts with a kind Basic set-up of the current bike. And depending on how it goes, we add a few components that we have on the plan. "

Before the turn of the year, BMW would like to complete further tests. The finished 2021 machine will probably not come until the beginning of next year: "We have planned another test with an interim version for November. However, due to the Corona, it is not yet clear whether we can test. The restrictions are currently being heavily adjusted again. We will have the entire bike ready by the first test next year at the latest. "

Longest test winter in WSBK history?

According to the current status, it is unlikely that the Superbike World Championship will start the new season as usual at the end of February on Phillip Island (Australia). "That won't be the case. I can already say that," comments Bongers.

As a result, the Superbike World Championship teams have a significantly longer test winter than in previous years in order to prepare for the new season. This ensures relaxation and makes tests shortly before and after the New Year unnecessary.

"We even tested in the week before Christmas," remembers Marc Bongers of the first test with the new S1000RR in December 2018. "But at this time of year you only have three or four hours a day when the temperatures are reasonably acceptable. We try to avoid tests in January because the weather is too uncertain. "

"But it looks like we will have more opportunities for tests in February and March. As things stand, it looks like the season will start at the end of March," said the BMW Motorradsport Director.

What test limits does BMW have in terms of the regulations in winter? "During the season there is a limit of eight test days. In addition, you are not allowed to drive on that track two weeks before a race weekend," explains Bongers. "The current regulation states that you have free options during the winter break."
