The euro came under pressure on Thursday after initial gains. In the afternoon, the rate of the common currency fell to 1.1901 US dollars, just above the daily low of 1.1885 dollars.

The euro had previously risen to around 1.1941 dollars, its highest level since the beginning of September. The European Central Bank (ECB) set the reference rate at 1.1900 (Wednesday: 1.1890) dollars. The dollar cost 0.8403 (0.8410) euros.
