I wrote a LinkedIn post last week about the value of part-time work for moms. Not everyone liked my post, which was covered by Working Mother. Many people, in fact, inboxed me to tell me how sternly they disagreed with my message.

In an age where moms are being squeezed out of the workplace at an alarming rate, I made the argument for part-time jobs for stay-at-home moms. The crux of my post: Part-time jobs help women stay in paid work and make it easier to transition into higher paying full-time roles. Doesn’t seem all that controversial, right? Well, think again.

People told me I was sending a message that women should take lesser-paying roles to stay in the workplace. That was not my intent. I would also like to argue that part-time working moms, in some instances, can make more than full-time working moms. Let me explain.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average woman ages 25 to 34 makes $727 weekly, or $37,804 annually. When I was living in Ohio, I paid $147 per day for daycare for my two kids at an employer-sponsored childcare facility.

If you do the math, paying $147 in childcare for 252 work days a year equals $37,044—almost the entire salary for your average young woman.

Now, compare that to the real "day-in-the-life" schedule for a part-time working mom I know, and what she pays for childcare:

Childcare costs: $31.25/day

By the end of the year, she's paid substantially less in childcare costs ($7,875)—while working only two few hours a day than her full-time counterparts!

Another part-time working mom I know enrolled her 2- and 4-year-old daughters in a Mother's Morning Out (MMO) program three days a week. She works from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. during those days and then does a few hours once or twice a week in the evenings. She pays $225 per month per kid for MMO and is contracted for 10 hours per week by her employer.

I am adding it to help others understand the broader picture. Parker has lived with me full time since the day this was filmed. He is excited to have a job this summer. I even thank the critics , for your words are teaching Parker and I to hone our skills, and yes, Parker and I read every single word.

I don ' t want to leave an organization that has spent time /money teaching me , I would much rather be given new challenges and novel ways to use my skills. If I get stuck in a position where I can't grow or learn new things, I become unmotivated and I don ' t work as hard because I go on auto pilot.

My point is this: Childcare is expensive and there’s no shame in a reduced workload. Yes, somehow, many women are able to take care of the kids while working full-time. Others need the income but can’t handle 40 hours of paid work amidst school closures. Some might have a hard time asking their employers to scale back to part-time.

Speaking as the owner of an executive resume writing firm, part-time working moms need to remember that there is no box on the resume to list how many hours a week you work. Resumes are marketing documents where you highlight your experience and results. If you can create value for your employer in 10 hours a week vs. 50 hours a week, you don't have to put a big red disclaimer on your resume stating that you worked a reduced workload.

Look, I get it. Not every job can be done part-time. Not every woman wants to work part-time. I just want women to have options. It might just alter the future of working motherhood.
