The Fight Over Canada’s Founding Prime Minister

The Fight Over Canada’s Founding Prime Minister Attacks on symbols of nationhood are not merely symbolic actions. They strike at the nationhood the symbol represents. These changes are not driven by public opinion. A 2018 poll by the Angus Reid Institute found that 70 percent of Canadians opposed the erasure of Macdonald’s image, compared with only 11 percent who supported it. Another poll in summer 2020 found that 75 percent of Canadians opposed the “spontaneous” teardown of Macdonald statues.

Comedian Norm Macdonald has died at 61, according to Deadline. The former Saturday Night Live ‘Weekend Update’ anchor secretly battled cancer for nine years. His longtime producing partner and friend, Lori Jo Hoekstra, who was with him when he died, says he wanted to keep the news private.

“He was most proud of his comedy,” Hoekstra says. “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”

He was also known for his hilarious impressions, including Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino, David Letterman, and Larry King.

In addition to his stint on the late-night show, Macdonald appeared in numerous films, including Grown Ups, Dr. Dolittle, Jack and Jill, Billy Madison, Funny People, Screwed, and The Animal. He also appeared in various late-night talk shot spots including appearances on Late Night With Conan O 'Brien (and O 'Brien's various other late night shows), and Late Night with David Letterman. Macdonald also had his own talk show on Netflix back in 2018, which only lasted one season, called Norm Macdonald Has a Show.

A Simple, Sparkly Summer Pound Cake

A Simple, Sparkly Summer Pound Cake Every week in Genius Recipes—often with your help!—Food52 Founding Editor and lifelong Genius-hunter Kristen Miglore is unearthing recipes that will change the way you cook. Crunching through the snow in Tasmania on the cusp of spring, Thalia Ho looked down and saw a layer of green peeking through the ice. Her first thought: I shouldn’t have worn Doc Martens. Her second: Basil granita. But several recipe tests in, she’d abandoned first the granita (the basil’s fragrance was muted) and then an herby cake (“the delicacy was just ruined in the heat”), settling instead on a sparkling basil sugar piled atop a buttery loaf. This was the one.

Across social media, various celebrities have been reacting to the news of Macdonald’s death, and some even shared their favorite performances from the impactful star.
