I was in college, on a short road trip with friends, from San Diego to Los Angeles. Once we reached L.A. - the City of Angels, the City of Stars, Tinseltown - we went to the one spot everyone could agree on: Del Taco. I'd never eaten at the chain before, so it surprised me that French fries were even on the menu of a self-proclaimed "Fresh Mexican Grill." Remember, this was circa 2010, long before Taco Bell made Mexican fries a thing. But this was also Southern California, home of the California burrito: a traditional burrito stuffed with French fries.

I Spent 4 Days Making Everything In an Air Fryer—Here's What I Learned

I Spent 4 Days Making Everything In an Air Fryer—Here's What I Learned It's easier and healthier than deep-frying. But is it as good? When it comes to the “latest and greatest” kitchen gadgets, I’ll be the first to admit I have some baggage. A few years ago, my brother nearly ruined Christmas dinner by using an “As Seen On TV” infrared oven (a gimmicky predecessor to the air fryer) to “re-fry” my mom’s Vietnamese imperial rolls. Not only did it take forever, but the rice paper wrappers emerged from the “miracle machine” with an extremely unappetizing plastic-like texture. It was a grim meal that my mother has never let him forget.

So there we were, in Del Taco, and there they were, French fries on the menu. Someone, a friend of one of the friends I'd come with, ordered them. Out they came, along with her tacos. We found a table and sat down - and that's when she did it. She drenched her fries in ketchup. She squirted three damn packets of it all over them before diving in, covering her fingers with red, slimy stuff every time she grabbed a spud.

I'd never seen anyone eat fries that way. Truly, it was ... maddening.

Fast food spots have tiny, paper cups for a reason: your condiments. If you want to ignore them, either for the sake of the environment or out of sheer laziness, that's fine. But why, WHY, would you not just squirt your ketchup into the corner of the container like a normal human?

What the Heck Is In Your Hot Dog?

What the Heck Is In Your Hot Dog? How about some pink paste and flame retardant?Hot dogs are a quintessential summer barbecue staple, but oftentimes, the ingredients are far from what we’d deem necessary.

Maybe this is me, exerting my control freak nature. Because I just don't see how you're going to get the exact right amount of ketchup per fry if you're willy-nilly slopping it onto a giant pile of potatoes. Haven't we all learned our lesson from ballpark nachos? The cheese is drizzled on top and the chips at the bottom are always, always sauce-less.

Or maybe I'm doing it wrong, wasting precious energy dipping each fry separately. If you think so, please tell me. I'm a great listener - even if I don't take your advice.
