The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division released an advisory bulletin Friday warning the public that bottles of wine manufactured by a Missouri winery pose the risk of exploding.

The bulletin follows a news release issued by the Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control stating that certain products manufactured by Eldon, Missouri-based winery Casa de Loco may pose a danger of exploding and should be immediately secured to prevent injury. The wine should not be consumed.

The issue was found during a routine inspection by the Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco (ATC).

"In addition to a bottle of Casa de Loco wine exploding after being confiscated by ATC, there have been several additional reported explosions of Casa de Loco wine bottles," according to the Missouri press release.

“We don’t believe these products have been sold in Iowa, but may have been purchased by Iowans traveling to Missouri,” said Josh Happe, Chief of Regulatory Compliance at Iowa ABD. “Anyone in possession of these products should immediately store them in a safe location should they explode and contact the Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control.”

ATC State Supervisor Dorothy Taylor stated via news release that the division is investigating. She asks that any consumer or retailer who has any of the affected bottles to call 573-751-2964 and report when and where they purchased the wine.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is also currently investigating Casa de Loco for potential health and sanitation violations at its manufacturing premises, the press release stated. Consumers should contain the bottles and store them in a safe location in case they explode.

The division has contacted retailers of Casa de Loco wines and suggested they remove the unregistered products from their stores.

"Casa de Loco has informed ATC that it will be removing the products from retailers," the press release stated.
