Puffed Quinoa Is My Sprinkle of Choice

Puffed Quinoa Is My Sprinkle of Choice If you’re in the market for a new salad topper or granola star, this crispy-crunchy stuff checks all the boxes.Puffed quinoa is the result of heating and agitating raw quinoa until it pops, transforming each seed into a light, crispy morsel. If you’ve ever made popcorn before, you’ll recognize the process; while corn gets all the glory, nearly every whole grain (and pseudocereal, like quinoa, amaranth, or buckwheat) can be “popped” the same way—and yield just as delightful a result, though significantly smaller in size.

Tongs : They’re like an extra set of invincible hands, for when you can’t put your own into a vat of oil, onto a grill grate, or into a pot of pinching lobsters. But open your drawer, and you may see an armory’s worth of kitchen tongs . Some may look like hair accessories or hardware pieces or even

A carving set is key because it includes a fork to grip and hold the meat (or poultry) and a sharp knife. Don't skimp here: A good sharp knife is one of the most important tools

No matter your level of kitchen expertise, you need a set of tongs. Precise, dextrous, and straightforward in design, good tongs solve a number of culinary problems that no other tool can—while getting, it must be said, minimal glory for their efforts. What other item in your drawer full of spatulas and spoons can sauce a bowl of bucatini one minute and pull a pork chop out of the flames on your grill the next? When you consider just how much the simple pinchers are able to accomplish, a Tongs Appreciation Day doesn’t feel entirely out of the question.

Of course, while any set of tongs is better than none, certain characteristics set some varieties a notch above the rest. The Epicurious team widely agrees that the OXO Good Grips tongs are the best model that money can buy. Personally, for versatility and function, nothing else I’ve tried comes close.

Hawaij Is the Spice Blend That Goes Savory, Sweet—and In Your Coffee

Hawaij Is the Spice Blend That Goes Savory, Sweet—and In Your Coffee The classic Yemeni blend is an all-purpose flavoring agent to be used in everything from marinades to pies. After she launched the book, Al-Hussain headed back to the kitchen to develop a second product: hawaij, or hawayij, a spice blend that's a staple of Yemeni cuisine. Though she'd included a recipe for hawaij in Sifratna, Al-Hussain said, "Not everyone has time to buy whole spices and go through the process in order to have that." She figured she'd make it easy—now she sells it, premixed, in jars. (And has since added a third product: a children's book.

For the best wilt-free green salad, avoid using tongs to toss and serve. She opens a second clamshell and packs in more than should fit, pours a lovely homemade vinaigrette over the top, and then takes a pair of kitchen tongs out and starts pinching and turning those tender baby greens over and

Best Budget: Hot Target Set of 3 Tongs at Amazon. " This set of three comes with a pair of 7", 9", and 12" tongs all for a bargain price." If tongs are your gadget of choice around the kitchen then getting a set of three might be a good idea so you'll always have a clean option handy.

The best kitchen tongs can do it all, and under almost any circumstances: readily transition from stovetop to grill, handle delicate and sturdy food alike, and work with any kind of pot or pan in your kitchen, regardless of their material. Regular all-metal tongs are inexpensive and hardworking, but they’re not friendly to your non-stick, coated, or ceramic cookware. The OXO Good Grips tongs feature a black scalloped silicone head at the end of each stainless steel arm, which make them safe to use with any pan or Dutch oven and in environments up to 600°F.

Commerce Editor Emily Johnson notes that, like most things made OXO, these feel good in your hand and are easy to use; the time non-slip grip and thumb rests make them seem like a comfortable extension of your arm than anything else. Associate Commerce Editor Lauren Joseph agrees: “I have better dexterity for turning and flipping when I use them—and I get a much better sense of doneness when I prod a piece of meat with their soft ends.” Also, when it comes to cooking on an open burner, she finds that nothing does a better job; the OXO is her go-to tool when toasting tortillas or puffing chapatis.

Clean Your Spice Grinder With Bread; Congratulate Yourself With Spiced Breadcrumbs

Clean Your Spice Grinder With Bread; Congratulate Yourself With Spiced Breadcrumbs A means to an end is also a means to a really delicious topper for anything you're cooking. Most manufacturers and professionals warn against putting them under running water, since too much moisture can affect the works. Although, I must confess, I've cleaned an unplugged (!!) spice grinder this way more than once and suffered no problems for it. Still, when working with electrical equipment, it's better to be cautious and not follow my lead here.

Salad server set ? What's that ? For Anya, utilitarian tongs will do just fine. A good set of locking tongs can be used to flip meat in a pan or on a grill, toss Williams-Sonoma Open Kitchen Beechwood Angled Spatula, at Williams-Sonoma.com. If you can only have one piece of kitchen equipment, it

Choose a set that has either a ring or a magnet to keep all your spoons together. When you're mixing multiple ingredients, it's easiest to combine everything in bowls that have high sides. Look for a set of bowls made of a material that won't easily slip, stain, or warp.

As a lover of charred food, I am similarly smitten with OXO Good Grips’ ability to stand up to heat. When it’s too cold (or I’m too lazy) to lug everything up to my rooftop grill, I use my tongs to hold a whole bell pepper or eggplant over a cranked up burner, achieving a perfectly blackened exterior on all sides with no risk. The super simple locking mechanism featured at the back is a selling point for me, too. Though the toggle is standard of most nicer tong varieties, OXO’s is made of the same silicone as the heads, rather than sharp stainless steel. If my other hand is full, I can pop the tongs open by knocking the lock against my hip and get straight to carbonara tossing, skewer turning, and blanched vegetable fishing.

If, in the past, I didn’t show my tongs the respect they deserved, I think it’s because I hadn’t brought the OXO Good Grips into my life yet. Now that I have their heatproof, gentle-but-powerful arm-extending powers at my disposal, their unmatched utility is never far from my mind. Sometime between National Fried Chicken Day and Baked Potato Appreciation Day I plan to give my tongs their proper due—even if I'm celebrating alone in front of my grill.
