Mardi Gras officially started on February 16 but Universal Studios in Orlando is keeping the celebration going for the next few weeks. Universal typically hosts a Mardi Gras event characterized by live music performances throughout the park but this year, due to safety concerns related to COVID-19, the event is now all about the food.

In a report by PEOPLE, Universal's executive chef explained that rather than depending on live performances to keep guests entertained, Universal pivoted to offer 100 food and beverage options compared to the 20 food options available in years past. The food available during the celebration is inspired by over 13 countries around the world and what those cultures cook during Carnaval.

Pair Cookbooks With a Little Something for the Ultimate Holiday Gift

Pair Cookbooks With a Little Something for the Ultimate Holiday Gift How do you make a new cookbook into an even more thoughtful gift? Pair it with an essential—and specific—ingredient or tool. The only thing that makes that gift better in my mind is bundling the book with something specific that relates to its recipes. Sometimes this can be as simple as a hand-carved olive wood spoon, for a book filled with dishes—like curries and soups—that tend to linger a long while on the stovetop. Other times, it's a hard-to-find ingredient that a cook might skip over out of a sense of economy. Or, now and then, it's a really fantastic version of a pantry staple, like particularly fragrant cumin, or the creamiest tahini.

The food options include items like a Cuban sandwich, pernil and mofongo (pork and a plantain-based dish) from Puerto Rico, pineapple trini-chow (skewers) from Trinidad and Tobago, a jackfruit dish from The Bahamas, and more. For park-goers looking for more NOLA-inspired dishes, a crawfish boil, jambalaya, and beignets are also available.

Universal's International Flavors of Carnaval will run through March 28 at the park and guests can try 10 different items for $55. Annual ticket holders can try 15 items for $65. The park is also helping to ensure safety as much as possible by enforcing face coverings, social distancing, and requiring temperature checks upon entry. You can view a full menu of food options available during the event on Universal Orlando's website.
