According to Dr. Kim, most people don’t experience any adverse side effects when drinking chaga tea. But people with the conditions listed below are advised to avoid it.

  • Kidney problems. If you have issues such as kidney stones or kidney disease, it’s best to skip chaga tea because it contains high amounts of oxalate, a natural substance that can impact the kidneys, Dr. Kim says.
  • Diabetes or on blood-sugar medicine. “Chaga appears to be able to influence blood-sugar levels in laboratory studies, so people with diabetes may wish to be cautious,” says William W. Li, MD, physician, scientist, and author of Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself.
  • Bleeding disorders. People with bleeding disorders, like hemophilia, or who are on blood thinners, should drink chaga tea with caution or avoid altogether, Keller says, as chaga may interfere with blood clotting.
  • Auto-immune diseases. “Individuals with auto-immune disease are also advised to consume with caution as the immune-boosting potential of chaga extract may aggravate the immune system,” Dr. Naidoo says.
