The huge shortage of restaurant workers has led to a "bidding war" for staff that's driving wages up across the industry, the owner of a burger chain said. "Your restaurant neighbor next door might offer $1 more, then you go back and offer $1 more over that to just retain your people," George Frangos, owner and president of Farm Burger, told Insider.

McDonald's, Dunkin', Wendy's, Starbucks, and Chick-fil-A have all had to close dining rooms or adjust hours because they didn't have enough workers.McDonald's reminded franchisees of guidelines that would allow them to close dining rooms in areas with high rates of infection, and Chick-fil-A is allowing operators to keep them closed through January for safety, but many dining room closures across the country are actually a direct result of the labor shortage.
But despite this, McDonald's sales were, according to its third-quarter earnings report released on Wednesday, which it higher US menu prices and larger order sizes.

Independent restaurants are being crushed by the labor shortage. They're raising prices, cutting opening hours, and even closing down for good.
While chains like McDonald's, Starbucks, and Chipotle have hiked up wages, independent restaurants say this is much harder for them to afford. Insider spoke to many restaurants across the US who said that they'd raised wages, but that staff still earned less than $15 an hour, minus tips.In a poll ran by Alignable between September and October, 61% of independent restaurant owners said that they expected large companies to make their hiring process harder in the fourth quarter by offering higher wages they couldn't compete with.
The labor shortage is "also putting some pressure around speed of service," Kempczinski said, noting that restaurants were "down a little bit on speed of service over the last year-to-date."
"That's also a function of not being able to have the restaurants fully staffed," he said.
Kempczinski said that corporate-owned restaurants had raised their wages by an average of 15% in the year to date.

Kempczinsk said that McDonald's was also providing training to shift managers on how to engage and motivate their staff.
But he said that McDonald's staffing hadn't recovered as quickly as he'd expected, and predicted the problems would persist into 2022.
"Certainly I was hoping and expecting that we're going to see the situation improve maybe a little bit more quickly than what's materialized," he told investors. "And I think it is going to continue to be a difficult environment for the next several quarters."

McDonald's has raised prices but says customers aren't deterred

Kempczinsk said commodity costs for McDonald's were up 2% for the first nine months of 2021, but that he expected this to grow to between 3.5% and 4% for the full-year, with food and paper cost increases in the mid-single digits going into 2022.
To offset the higher wages and offset soaring supply prices, McDonald's has raised its prices. The increases are set to reach around 6% year-over-year by the end of 2021, Kempczinsk said.
"We haven't seen any more resistance to our price increases than we've seen historically," he said. Surveys showed that the new prices had been "pretty well received by customers," he added.
In the three months to September 30, McDonald's comparable sales wereglobally over the same time period in 2019, and 14.6% in the US. The company posted total revenues of $6.2 billion.
