“The younger a person starts and the more repeated the exposure to UV rays, the greater the risk for developing skin cancer later in life,” said Sen. Phil Boyle, the Suffolk County Republican who sponsored the bill.

Current law bars anyone 16 or under from using tanning booths. Those who are 17 can, but only with parental permission.

The bill passed Tuesday and on the way to the governor’s desk would require someone to be at least 18 to step into the booth.
