Health & Fit Men and Women Don’t Have the Same Fast Food Habits — See What the Key Difference Is
A Dietitian Says Reheating Leftover Pasta Lets You Enjoy "Fewer Carbohydrates and Calories"
You actually digest fewer calories and carbs when you eat leftover pasta, thanks to a process called retrogradation. You may not be able to enjoy your meal hot off the stove, but allowing pasta (and rice!) to cool down changes its structure into one that makes it healthier for us to consume. Let us break it down. First, it's important to know what a resistant starch is. We've heard time and time again how bad carbs are for us, but that applies to refined carbohydrates like bread and pasta.
A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that between 2013 and 2016, 36.6 percent of Americans ate on a given day. That’s about 85 million people!
“Fast food consumption has been a part of the American diet for a while,” Kirsten Herrick, Senior Service Fellow at the CDC, told. “With today’s busy lifestyle, fast food is an easy option that people choose.”
While the drive-thru remains a convenient way to fuel up on the fly (it’s called fast food for a reason, after all), the study found something interesting between the genders: men and women had very different fast food eating habits.
Sleep Paralysis Is the Stuff of Nightmares—and It's More Common Than You Think
Wake up, can't move, freak out.Imagine waking up early one morning. You’re able to see and hear everything around you and you can breathe just fine-but you can’t move. At all. Your limbs are frozen, your head is heavy, and you can't even wiggle your toes. A couple minutes pass, and as just as you feel like you're going to lose your mind, you regain control of your body.
Among adults who went to fast food spots, the most commonly reported meal to eat on the go was lunch, followed by dinner, breakfast, and snacks. Another interesting find? Men were more likely than women to eat fast food for lunch, whereas women were more likely to eat fast food as a snack. The study discovered that 9.2 percent more men ate fast food for lunch than women did, while 6.2 percent more women visited a quick-service restaurant for a snack.
In theory, this may lead us to conclude that many women who generally eat fast food pick up something small (think aSnack Wrap or a four-piece McNuggets), but the current study didn’t investigate the link between men and women’s different eating habits and the respective caloric consumption. However, a previous found that between 2007 and 2010, men consumed an average of 11.8 percent of their total calories from fast food, while women’s caloric intake from fast food clocked in at 10.9 percent — meaning the number of fast food calories consumed by men and women stayed roughly the same.
The Best BBQ in Every State
Plus, at least one runner-up for every choice, because there's more good barbecue out there than ever before.Good meat, good smoke. Nail those things, you don't need a whole lot else. Gimmicks, bells, whistles—how nice, no thanks. Sauce—if any—is an enhancement, not a flood in which to drown inadequacies. No too-clever-by-half litany of sides for distraction, no expensive design jobs, a minimum of carefully laid bric-a-brac, no purposefully distressed walls—really, you don't need walls at all. That's barbecue. That's barbecue at its most thrilling, anyway.
The CDC reminds us that fast food is linked to a higher average intake of calories, fat, and sodium—three culprits that can contribute to metabolic diseases such as obesity and heart disease if eaten in excess. Try limiting your drive-thru visits to once a week, and, when you do, don’t forget to review the items’ nutritionals.
Pro tip: Skipping out on fat-laden sides and add-ons such as French fries, bacon, and cheese can help you stay slim. And for more ways to slash cals, don’t miss these.
