Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a neurological disorder caused by too much fluid pressing on the brain. WebMD explains causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a neurological disorder characterized by an excessive accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain. CSF is always present, circulating critical nutrients to the brain and nervous system, and acting as a protective cushion.

Mr. Tudball was one of his most known characters on the show, an individual who was exasperated by his secretary’s indifference. In addition, Conway also appeared in a number of comedies produced by Walt Disney, such as “The Shaggy DA” and “The Apple Dumpling Gang.”

Over Conway’s 60-year career, he had won over six Emmy Awards. He was very passionate about what he did and he made sure he gave it his all in every project. Thus, it was a sad moment when he died of normal pressure hydrocephalus in Los Angeles on Tuesday, May 14.

According to WebMD, the condition normal pressure hydrocephalus happens when excess fluid from the brain as well as the spinal cord gather in the ventricles inside the brain.

Michael A. Williams, a professor of neurology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, explained that every human being possesses spinal fluid cavities inside the brain. These spinal fluids are called ventricles. Williams shared that in normal pressure hydrocephalus, the circulation in these ventricles is impaired. Over time, untreated normal pressure hydrocephalus tends to cause the spinal fluid cavities to enlarge.

According to the Hydrocephalus Association, about 700,000 Americans suffer this condition. However, only about 20 percent of this number receive an accurate diagnosis. It is typically caused by any bleeding around the brain due to head injuries or any blow to the head.

Some of the symptoms associated with normal pressure hydrocephalus include memory loss, speech problems, any particular change in behavior or mood, walking problems, leg weakness and unsteadiness.

Williams said that this condition is detected through an MRI as well as taking the patient’s medical history records. He further shared how most patients of this condition will most likely die of complications, rather than the actual condition.
