Years ago, it would’ve been natural to drop by the hospital unexpectedly after your friend had. You’d bring balloons or flowers and there’d be lots of holding and kissing and cuddling the baby. The hospital room would feel like it had a revolving door on it, as the newbie parents welcomed visitors in a nearly constant stream. At least, that’s how all the movies and TV shows from our childhood made it look. But increasingly, millennial parents are taking to a new practice that flies in the face of all that. It’s called and it basically entails limiting the number of visitors a baby will be exposed to in its first weeks — and ensuring that those who do visit are fully vaccinated first.

Infant cocooning isn’t exactly a new practice, but it’s certainly grown in popularity over the last few years,. It’s all about protecting your baby’s immunity during those vital first weeks, which means parents who abide by it typically allow only adult visitors to meet their babies, and ask friends and family to keep kids and other small children at home for a bit longer.
And while there may have been a time when that all sounded rather helicopter-y, we need only look to the recentaffecting several pockets of the U.S. to remind us that we need to do our best to protect the young and vulnerable.

Many parents we polled indicated they either love the idea of vaccine cocooning or have already started the practice.
Speaking with CBS, Dr. Dennis Murray explained that infant cocooning “is an attempt to protect the youngest infants from various types of infectious disease” which include diphtheria, the flu, and pertussis (AKA whooping cough). In fact, these are among the top infections parents ask visitors to be vaccinated for before they visit, since babies can’t be fully immunized for them before 2 months old.
“A baby under 6 months of age is more likely to be hospitalized or die frominfection as opposed to a 2-year-old or 12-year-old who gets ill and has a bad cough,” Dr. Ari Brown told the outlet.
The American Academy of Pediatrics certainly seems to be in favor of the practice. In 2015, amid a rise in whooping cough cases, the AAP promoted the practice as a protective strategy for.
And when you really think about it, it makes sense — we’re used to telling friends and family to wash their hands before holding the baby, to protect them from bacteria and germs their bodies can’t fully withstand yet. It’s normal for us to say, “Please don’t come near the baby if you have a cold.” So why wouldn’t we also do everything we can to protect babies from serious infectious diseases when they’refor them?
