Back in September, I spent a week in Madrid with a group of friends, and I did what would have felt impossible just a few years ago. I devoured chocolate croissants, delicious cakes, and any other pastries that tickled my fancy. I feasted on paella and beef cheeks, delectable hams and cheeses, and enjoyed Spanish tortilla. And I quenched my thirst with more glasses of wine and sangria than I can count. The most amazing part of it all? I didn’t spend even one minute of time feeling any shame about how much I consumed. There were no quips about how "vacation calories don’t count" or how I’d have to "go extra hard in the gym" to make up for all the food I ate on my trip — none of that occurred this time around. It was pure bliss.

If I'd taken this trip a few years ago, however, things would have been drastically different. My relationship with food was much more complicated back then — I was deeply entrenched in diet culture and obsessed with maintaining a smaller body at all costs. I justified this misery by adopting a self-righteous attitude — I was “healthier,” “more disciplined,” and “more committed," I told myself. Food is experience

Have you ever waited two hours to try a new restaurant that everyone is raving about? Have you ever spent hours making an amazing spread, knowing that the meal will only last 30 minutes? I’ve done both, and it’s never really just about the food. If it were, we would always just pick the cheapest, quickest, and most convenient option. But food is about the experience — the experience of dining at a new restaurant, even though it may take 45 minutes for your food to arrive; and of sharing a meal with your friends and enjoying good conversation, even though you spent more money than you would have if you just ate at home. The experience of food makes it so much more meaningful than just the calories.

Food is culture

One of my favorite parts of traveling is embracing the local culture, and that is done largely through exploring the rich history of food and drinks in the region. Before a trip, I research all the amazing food I must try in a new city or country — sightseeing and exploring are just what I do to pass the time between meals. Food is memories

So many of our memories are tied to food. Don’t the holidays remind you of sitting around the dinner table feasting on homemade delicacies of all varieties? Perhaps the smell of freshly baked sweet potato pie reminds you of your grandmother, or maybe the smoke wafting off a grill makes you think fondly of family cookouts. One of my early memories of food is helping my mom mix all the ingredients in our KitchenAide to make French bread. Nowadays, anytime the hint of fresh bread is drifting through the air, I think of baking bread with my mom.

When we think of food as only as fuel, it discounts so much of the essence of eating. Eating can and should also be a pleasurable experience, but it's been co-opted by diet culture and the fear of gaining weight.

As a fitness professional that helps women embrace their bodies — no matter the size — I believe it's necessary that we work to unlearn our harmful narratives around food and heal our broken relationship with eating. You won’t likely go from obsessing about every morsel to eating a smorgasbord of food overnight — it certainly didn’t happen that quickly for me. But you can start taking simple actions, such as allowing yourself to enjoy one experience without thinking about calories or weight gain. It could be as small as enjoying cream in your coffee or enjoying a mid-afternoon cookie or scone while catching up with a friend. Or it could be going to dinner and ordering what you actually want instead of what you think you should get.

Breaking free from obsessing over food is not about eating as much as you can, it’s about learning to trust yourself again. Diet culture has taught us that we can’t trust ourselves around food — that we need someone or something outside of ourselves, be it a fitness professional, coach, or diet app — to tell us what and how to eat. But I disagree. It’s a process of peeling back the layers of who you are, reconnecting to your intuition, and arming yourself with the proper knowledge.

The good news is eating doesn’t have to be an experience that is plagued by guilt and shame — my trip to Spain was definitely a reminder of that. Life is a beautiful journey, and so much of our reality is created by us. We can choose to create a reality that is not stifled by food, the scale, or an obsession with cellulite. Instead, we can create a life filled with love, self-compassion, and true liberation.

When I’m on my deathbed, the memories I cultivated along the way are the things I will relish. I won’t look back and wish I would have denied myself a slice of decadent cake, or maintained my six pack abs, at the expense of my sanity. I will, however, remember the week I spent in Madrid, eating chocolate croissants and laughing to the point of tears with my girlfriends.
