In preparation for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the women spend months rehearsing for six hours a day, six days a week. During the height of the Christmas season from the beginning of November through the beginning January, the 36 dancers are performing up to four 90-minute shows a day, as many as 17 per week. During this time, their workout routines involve warming up for shows or rehearsal on a treadmill, stretching, a bit of weight lifting, and a lot of dancing. “Rockettes disciplined me to be able to train my body and helped me to train for the marathon,” Reid said.

And, as in rehearsals and performance, she enjoys bonding with other Rockettes through running. One of these women who shares a love of running is Katelyn Gaffney, who is in her 10th season with the Rockettes. The two women ran the Berlin Marathon together last year. Gaffney finished in 4:08:43, and Reid ran the race in 4:47:24.

“In dance, there’s a sisterhood and bond that you find in running community as well,” Reid said. “You have likeminded individuals who are working toward a similar goal. Both are fun—the major difference is in dance you’ve got sequins, sparkles, and red lipstick and in running you have sneakers and wide road.”

The Rockets are famous for their precision kick line, where each dancer’s leg is at exactly the same height as those on either side of her. When the Rockettes were on stage, I started with the premise that they do kick in a straight line. To confirm, I crated a comparable mental image.

Gaffney, who started running when she was in eighth grade, said lacing up helps her with her endurance and stamina, and she can keep going in dance routines longer without having to catch her breath.

“One of my favorite things to do is wake up and just run. Runners are an incredible community,” Gaffney said. “Similar to the Rockettes, it’s a supportive group of people.”

When she’s not training for a marathon, Gaffney said she enjoys getting out for 5-mile runs at least a few times a week. Depending on how she’s feeling she might even throw in a long run, which allows her to take in the scenery around her.

Both women incorporate weight training into their routines and workout classes like Equinox Precision Run and hot yoga. And, Reid said fueling for shows and long runs is pretty similar. She starts show days with a cinnamon raisin bagel and cream cheese, and before a race reaches for a salt bagel with peanut butter.

For recovery after a long day of performing the women often hop into ice baths after a or soak in an Epsom salt bath, which helps them be able to do it all again the next day.

Ice baths are key in Rockettes and running,” Reid said.
