A new study has shown that eating fish during pregnancy can reduce the risk of the baby developing heart disease and diabetes later in life. Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine found that children whose mothers ate fish one to three times a week during pregnancy were more likely to have a lower risk of metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome is a variety of health conditions, such as hypertension and high blood sugar, excess fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels, which increase the risk of heart disease, stroke cerebral (stroke) and type 2 diabetes.

Although fish are an important source of omega-3 fatty acids, certain types of fish, including swordfish and mackerel, may contain high levels of mercury, which has been shown in previous studies to be cause neurological damage.
This study followed more than 800 women and children from five European countries who were asked about their consumption of fish during their pregnancy.
Children of women who ate fish one to three times a week had lower scores for metabolic syndrome than children of women who ate fish less than once a week.
However, the benefit decreased if women ate fish more than three times a week.
"It is possible that when women eat fish more than three times a week, this exposure to pollutants may offset the beneficial effects of fish consumption observed at lower absorption levels," said one author. study, Nikos Stratakis.
