Previous studies had already shown that the small oilseed had the capacity to reduce the blood level of cholesterol LDL (bad cholesterol), associated with a cardiovascular risk.

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University followed patients with high bad cholesterol for six weeks. A first group of participants consumed 43 grams of almonds per day, the equivalent of a large handful, while the control group ate a banana muffin.

At the end of each diet period, the researchers measured each participant's HDL cholesterol level and function, then compared the results with the medical reports established at the start of the experiment.

"HDL is very small by the time it enters the bloodstream," says Dr. Kris-Etherton. "It looks like a little trash bag that slowly grows as it collects cholesterol from cells before it dumps it into the liver, where it will be broken down." During this journey, the HDL cholesterol particles get bigger: they become mature.

The study shows a 19% increase in the level of mature HDL cholesterol particles in people who consumed almonds. In addition, the transport function of excess cholesterol to the liver was improved by 6.4% in patients of normal weight.

Rich in magnesium (anti-cramps) and potassium (anti-water retention), almonds are also a healthy and satisfying snack thanks to their richness in fibers and proteins. A handful of ten almonds has about 100 calories.

The results of the study were published on the Journal of Nutrition website.
