When I graduated, I took a stressful, 16-hours-a-day job where there wasn’t a gym within 50 miles of me. To cope with the stress, I ate more. In the first five years out of college, I went from 210 pounds to 365 pounds.

At 27 years old, I tied my shoes loosely, so I could slip them on and off without having to bend over to tie them up. I couldn’t walk my hunting dog more than half a mile without being completely exhausted. I hated looking at myself in the mirror, and I hated the fact that I had let myself get to this point.

I stayed that way until I was 28 in 2014 when I was in my first year of being a hunting guide. His youngest patient to die from a heart attack was younger than I was at the time. He told me that every medical condition would be harder to deal with if I was overweight. Those words really resonated with me—I had wanted to make a change so many times before, but I couldn’t do it. Now, I knew I had to make it work.

My journey started with a gym membership. I pedaled away on the recumbent bike and slowly began lifting weights, which led to my finding a trainer. Ultimately, my goal was to get back in the pool like my high school and college days. For that, I’d need cardio training.

I had never enjoyed running. As a larger framed, 6-foot-5 man, I’m built more like a sprint swimmer. Running always seemed intimidating, but I ended up getting into it for three reasons. The first reason was my dog. When I started going to the gym, I was so spent when I got home that they weren’t getting the attention and exercise they needed. But I discovered canicross, a sport where you run with your dog tethered around your waist. In this format, I was able to exercise and spend time with my best friend.

My second reason was my travel, which was mostly to rural areas without gyms—running was an easy answer for that. Finally, I also discovered a love of aquathons, which include a 1000-meter swim and a 5K run, an activity I was introduced to by a couple I met.

Through all of this, I was able to build up my endurance and slowly lose weight, hitting milestones like dropping below 300 pounds eight months after I started. But my weight loss didn’t just from exercising. It also came from changing what I ate.

It’s a joke to refer to my pre-weight-loss eating habits as a diet. I ate like a dumpster. Anything I wanted, whenever I wanted it: Three to five beers every night, boxes of mac and cheese, breakfast sandwiches from the gas station.

During the weight loss, I reduced my carb intake, and started eating wraps instead of bread when I could. I turned to lean meats like ground turkey and chicken, lots of veggies and fruits, and I stuck to the fresh food aisles at the grocery store. I also tracked it all with the MyFitnessPal app, which was eye opening to see all of the calories I consumed.

This didn’t happen all at once. I had spent years trying crash diets. They never worked because it was such a culture shock that was too much change at one time. It wasn’t sustainable. I started by taking baby steps. I examined my lifestyle and picked three to four things that weren’t healthy that I could do without.

For example, I stopped drinking during the week, eating bagels, and stopped eating at one particular food chain. Once these became habits, I’d add a few more. These ended up making it easier for me as I continued getting fitter and also faster.

Over the years, my weight dropped all the way down to 225 pounds, where I am at today. My new self feels more confident, has increased energy, and is enjoying his new lease on life. I compared myself to an old pickup truck versus a Ferrari. The nicer car is finicky about the type of gas and oil you put into it. Like me, I have to be careful about what goes into it or the whole style would be out of whack.

In 2019, I had the honor of competing for Team USA at the ITU World Championships in Spain. I’m not a great runner, but my swimming made me competitive. It was such an adventure.

None of that would’ve been possible had I not listened to the doctor on that hunting trip in 2014. I actually ran into him two years after that trip, and he didn’t recognize me. We still stay in touch today.

For anyone who wants to go on a similar journey, my advice is to not make it private. Tell people what you’re doing. It’s a great way to hold yourself accountable, and you’ll never know who you’ll inspire to do the same.

Also, remind yourself that the fitness and healthy lifestyle isn’t easy. It’s a challenge. Don’t let the smiling faces and fancy workout clothes fool you, it’s a struggle. But the end results make it worth every second.
