Lighter and Softer

Women’s shoes share a few features based on characteristics that may or may not apply to you. It’s possible you might prefer a “men’s” shoe, just as some men might feel more comfortable in a “women’s” shoe. The designs of the shoes are just based on general group tendencies—such as that women have less muscle mass than men and tend to weigh less as a result. For this reason, women’s shoes often have a lighter and softer midsole to make up for the lower degree of impact put on the shoe with each stride.

Foot Shape

Studies on foot shape have shown that women’s feet aren’t just smaller, narrower versions of men’s feet—there are differences in overall shape that affect shoe fit. Women’s feet tend to be comparatively wider in the forefoot, with a narrower heel. Running shoe makers take this statistical difference into mind when designing their shoes, and generally build their shoes with different heel shapes and sometimes different heel materials between two models of the same shoe. Companies like Altra, with its Fit4Her technology, specifically design shoes that anatomically mirror a woman’s foot.

12 Super Comfy Shoes For Counting All Your Steps Sneaks you’ll love cruising around in (almost) as much as your favorite pair of running shoes. As a running magazine, we often tout the health benefits of our sport, but honestly, walking is pretty great, too. In fact, research shows that—just like runners—people who walk at a moderate intensity regularly have a lower risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. Turns out the most important thing is that you’re getting miles in, wherever and at whatever pace you can—as long as you’re able to practice safe social distancing measures while you do it.

The shoes in this guide are go-to shoes for everyday running , whether you’re a competitive runner looking for a workhorse shoe for easy or recovery Traditional running shoes tend to have a thicker heel than front, or a heel-to-toe drop in the 10 mm to 12 mm range. This provides more cushioning

The Hip Factor

Researchers have also found that because women tend to have wider hips than men, our feet are more likely to strike the ground toward the outside of our shoe soles. The inward rolling of the foot that results from this is known as pronation, which explains why more women are believed to overpronate than men. Some women’s running shoes account for this increased tendency with different materials used for support through the sole.

Prime your legs for mud-splattering, because that’s what the Speedcross is made for. Deep, toothy lugs ensure a strong hold on gloppy terrain, while the upper’s snug, locked-in fit gave testers confidence on sloshy, soupy trails post-rainstorm. Both rugged and nimble, this shoe is for racing in dirt, gravel, and even snow, thanks to its extremely protective—though not fully waterproof—upper. “I love the new fabric, which is a tightly-woven, tougher material,” one tester said. “Yet, my thought regarding its comfort was, ‘OMG, I have slippers on!’” Another tester familiar with the Speedcross’s earlier iterations praised the shoe’s newly widened forefoot and enhanced stability. Plus, a more responsive EnergyCell+ midsole provides high rebound with ample cushioning, especially for heel strikers.

Merrell Antora

The Antora gets Merrell’s debut of a techie new feature called Q-Form 2, a compression-molded EVA midsole engineered specifically for women’s feet. The design places softer zones of cushioning in the heel and forefoot that keep form true when fatigue sets in, while extra air pods at the heel maximize shock absorption. Combined with a solid heel counter and removable cushioned insole, the Antora caters to neutral runners who want an extra pinch of stability with softness to spare. Our testers liked the sticky Vibram rubber outsole and EVA rock plate’s grip and protection on dry surfaces, as well. The standout feature was actually the Antora’s sturdy upper, which marries durable TPU overlays to an odor-zapping antimicrobial mesh, and ties up with durable rope-like lacing.

Brooks Hyperion Tempo

The Hyperion Tempo may be the “training shoe” to the Hyperion Elite 2, but don’t rule it out as a trainer for racing. The shoe is moderately cushioned, responsive, and more affordable than its $250 counterpart. The shoe doesn’t have a carbon-fiber plate but its DNA Flash midsole, which is made of nitrogen-infused foam, offers impressive rebound. The Tempo also gets the upper hand in sizing. The shoe runs in men’s and women’s sizes, resulting in a snugger, true-to-size fit for women in contrast to the unisex-sized Elite. “The highlight of this shoe is its responsiveness,” one tester said. “The light weight and the fluid design of the midsole give a bewitching sensation to push your foot from heel to toe quicker.”

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37

This update to Nike’s longest-running trainer is a great one, subtly improving on an already excellent all-rounder. The midsole is all new, with springy React foam instead of Cushlon ST, and a forefoot air unit—a pocket of air within the midsole. Nike says the air unit is twice as big as previous Pegasus forefoot air units. (The women’s units are specifically tuned to a softer 15 PSI, instead of the men’s 20 PSI, for even more comfort.) And, the entire shoe has 2mm more foam than the Pegasus 36. The resulting model hits a sweet spot that so many trainers strive for. “The ride is comfortable, responsive, and snappy,” one tester said. “Normally you don’t get all three from shoes.”

Saucony Kinvara 11

Shop Now

Long-standing favorites in the Saucony lineup, previous versions of the Kinvara have nabbed multiple Runner’s World accolades, including our Editors’ Choice award. That’s because it’s an excellent lightweight option, especially if you like to go fast. The newest version switches to an EVA-based PWRRUN midsole, which sits beneath a 3mm layer of TPU-based PWRRUN+, the more premium of the two foams for its increased durability and bouncier feel. (With the plus version sitting closer to the foot, the Kinvara 11 felt softer than the 10th version to testers, even though mechanical impact tests at the RW Shoe Lab showed that the 11 is actually a bit firmer.) Regardless, runners happily laced up the Kinvara for everything, from 400-meter repeats to marathon training long runs.

Asics Gel-Kayano 27

The 26th Gel-Kayano brought big changes, including a sleeker look and more stability for overpronators. This version continues the trend by reshaping the external heel counter for more comfortable support, and tweaking the upper mesh for better air flow. All this—plus a longer, gender-specific medial plate that extends from the midsole to the heel—comes with the intention of providing more motion control and a sturdier ride. Two types of lightweight foam at the heel (for added bounce) and toe (for forward propulsion) give the shoe plenty of plush cushioning, while added rear and forefoot Gel pockets boost shock absorption. Plus, the women’s version has an extra 3mm of midsole height to reduce strain on the Achilles.

Altra Escalante 2

The fast and responsive Escalante now adds more cushion and support with a high-rebound midsole that feels stiff and snappy for speedwork, yet cushy enough for long runs. “I’m hoping for my first BQ at my next marathon, and I’ll be wearing these shoes for that race,” said a tester. “The low drop makes me feel faster, more efficient, and lighter on my feet.” While the 2 runs a little narrower than the 1.5, it still sports a wide toe box and a flexible flat-knit upper to satisfy runners used to a generous fit. Plus, Altra’s women-specific last takes into account the wearer’s narrower heel, higher instep, and longer arch. Keep an eye out for the delayed launch of the 2.5 that’s expected by the end of August 2020.

Brooks Ghost 13

A perennial favorite for new runners and marathon maniacs alike, the Ghost has always provided a quick, smooth ride that holds up over the miles. This year’s edition raises an already-stellar bar by extending the DNA Loft for the full-length of the midsole. The change adds a little more softness to the forefoot, and also makes the transition from touchdown to toe-off feel more natural. Though our testers liked the lightweight support from the Ghost 12’s 3D printed upper, they felt it could use a little more breathability—and Brooks listened; the 13 switches to a new air mesh that improves ventilation. “From front to back, the cushioning is superb without being too mushy,” one tester said. “It provides a soft landing while also letting me feel the terrain beneath me.”

Hoka One One Mach 3

If you’ve never considered Hokas to be speed-day footwear, you likely haven’t tried the Mach. The latest version rides the line between feeling fast and cushioned, with a responsive midsole that provides just enough bounce, and a rubberized foam outsole with no shortage of traction. It’s not as heavy as the Clifton—nor as softly cushioned—but it’s lighter, stiffer, and still has enough foam to protect your feet atop a smooth, rolling rocker-style sole. Testers loved the new engineered jacquard upper for its breathability, but did find that the toe box felt almost too roomy. “Its light bounce pumped up my tempo runs, protected my joints as I pounded the pavement, and still delivered on energy return and support,” said test editor Amanda Furrer.

New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v10

The 1080 was already the plushest trainer in New Balance’s stable, but the new version is “bouncy, responsive, and light,” says one former collegiate runner on our test team. Give credit to Fresh Foam X, the company’s light and soft midsole foam. The sole is softer than before and has more energy return, but it doesn’t feel overly stiff because New Balance gave it a more pronounced curve, especially beneath the forefoot. On top, its upper uses an engineered knit, a one-piece fabric that is stretchy over the toes but sturdy along the sides of the shoe so it delivers a secure fit. The molded heel has a deep pocket and wraps comfortably up the back of the foot to eliminate any unwanted movement—a feature that was highly praised by women with narrow feet on our wear-test team.

a close up of some shoes: When you have an active job—from construction to personal training to food delivery—your shoes need to do a whole lot more work than you think, especially if you’re on your feet all day. You’re not a typewriter monkey—you need something very specific to your lifestyle. So what are the best work shoes for being on your feet all day? Being super active? Well there are a few things you should definitely look for. The biggest one right off the bat: durability. Choose kicks that are made from a super-tough material, ideally leather, but a synthetic mesh can also provide plenty of hold.Another super important one is stability, especially when it comes to the tread; you don’t want to be slipping and sliding all day. Rubber soles are always a solid option. And don’t forget the fit: a good work shoe for work should not be too loose. (Even a slightly tighter fit is more preferable, since the leather can mold to your foot.) Don’t ever buy a size up—you’re not going to grow any more, big guy.You might also be inclined to believe that you should sacrifice form for function with a great work shoe, but that’s not the case. What makes the best work shoe is a combination of style and functionality. As you’ll see below, none of our favorite shoes for work ditch perfect form. Check out the best work shoes for men to protect their feet and feel comfortable for all-day wear.
