Tire choice makes a big impact on how your electric bicycle handles and rides. Speed, range, suspension and maneuverability are all highly Choosing the right tire is even more important on an electric bicycle because ebikes spend a lot more time riding at higher speeds than a standard bicycle.

How To Build, Buy and Enjoy All Things Electric. Menu. Schwalbe and Maxxis are the two best brands you can get for really good tires for your ebike . How Tire Pressure Affects Your Ride. Your electric bike tires will often have the maximum rated pressure written on the sidewall.

There are many types of cyclists, and a further segmentation among ebike riders. Some of us are new to the game entirely, drawn in by the relatively gentle learning and effort curve electric bikes afford. Maybe we’ve been cycling for years, but just got into ebiking.

Still, each of us is united by one critical link: tires.

Tires may seem dull to you, but ask anyone who races bikes (or any motorized machine on two or four wheels) how much they pay attention to the rubber beneath them and then get ready for an hours-long dialogue.

These chemically complex doughnuts barely make more than a few postage stamps of connection beneath your bicycle and the ground at any given moment, yet that’s all that’s keeping you safe as you ride. Knowing how your tires work, which design is best for the kind of riding you do, and how to prevent a tire from flatting too easily will save you hours of headaches—not to mention, make you much safer on the road or dirt.

For this piece we interviewed several experts on the subject of replacing ebike tires, one of whom is REI’s Ryan Holte, who looks after the outdoor chain’s entire bike portfolio. He says bike manufacturers have to make compromises on the tires they spec, trying to find one tire for every type of rider and all the variable terrain the bike they’re selling might be ridden on. “That’s really region-specific, and conditions-specific. What’s going to be a great tire in Seattle is going to be different than a great tire for Arizona, or one for Atlanta,” Holte says.

Bike Tires Aren’t Car Tires

We’ll get into specific tire models for different use cases below. But first, it’s important to understand how bicycle tires actually work, and how they’re not the same as car tires.

Specialized’s Wolf VormWalde is the brand’s tire expert. He stresses some basic truths any cyclist (whether ebike rider or not) should understand. Like REI’s Holte, he says, “Tread choice depends on where you ride.”

The Best (and Most Fun) Fitness and Hybrid Bikes

The Best (and Most Fun) Fitness and Hybrid Bikes After spinning around downtown, on the roads near our office, and on local trails, we’ve settled on these 9 exceptional rides. We’ll admit we’re biased, but there are few better ways to get in shape or maintain your fitness than riding a bicycle—and you don’t need a high-end road-racing model to do it. Fitness bikes (also known as hybrids) offer a balance of lightweight speed and a comfortable, confidence-inspiring upright riding position. Other features you’ll typically find are wide tires for smoothing out choppy pavement and (if you so choose) gravel, simple and sometimes maintenance-free drivetrains, and disc brakes for more control, especially on slick surfaces.

If you want to buy any commercially available ebike from a bike dealer you should expect to pay at least 00, and most of the bikes are closer to 00. If something isn’t right with your ebike kit or battery then don’t be an ass to the dealer. You’re much more likely to get much better service that way.

AliExpress carries wide variety of products, so you can find just what you’re looking for – and maybe something you never even imagined along the way.

But he also wants you to think about how a tire stays glued to the riding surface—or doesn’t. “For the tire to grip and handle predictably you want the most contact between tire and ground possible,” he says.

VormWalde explains that unlike car tires, which have lots of grooves and cuts (called sipes), most bicycle tires are smoother at the center, “without too many grooves.” This is to give the tire the most grip possible, since the contact area is relatively tiny and that center section is designed to conform to the surface, like pouring gelatin into a mold. The better conformity, the more grip.

Any knobs or cuts are deeper and more plentiful at the shoulder of the tire, and they’re there to help you corner, especially on gravel. The more gravel you ride, relative to asphalt, the more shoulder knob you want. “If the ground is more loose, you want a tire that penetrates the loose surface and sinks in just enough to connect to the harder ground underneath,” VormWalde suggests.

VormWalde also says, counterintuitively, that slick road tires don’t need the sipes of a car tire. The latter is actually designed to form a little wave directly in front of its path, then to squish down on that wave and squirt water aside. A bicycle tire on wet asphalt has very good grip, he says. Its smoother center cuts through water to the ground beneath. But you want that outward shoulder knob or some pattern out from the center to penetrate the “dirt that gets washed up by the rain. It forms a slick film that is not easy to penetrate for the tire,” VormWalde says.

The gist is that the more dirt you ride, the more knobby a tire you need, but even tires for electric gravel and mountain bikes have a faster-rolling center for the same reason tires for the street do—to conform to the surface and give you better climbing and braking traction.

How to Reduce Flats

Specialized’s VormWalde wants you to stop thinking about a “magic” tire that will prevent flats in all cases. But there is one thing he thinks all riders should do more frequently: Inspect the tires on their bikes before every ride.

“Eighty percent of all transport and fitness riders go out on underinflated tires, and the No. 1 flat protection is to keep your tires inflated properly,” VormWalde says.

The added stress this puts on tires leads to flats, he says, and Bryan Richardson, who owns Utility Bikes in Kingston, New York, an independent shop that focuses more on repairs rather than selling a lot of new bikes, thinks most cyclists wind up with flats because they seldom pay attention to their tires, period.

“If you depend on your bike for transportation, especially, you really need to familiarize yourself and educate yourself with the bike you own. It’s an investment in your own safety,” he says.

Richardson is especially concerned that cyclists don’t necessarily understand the basic mechanics of the tires on their bikes. So the first time they get a flat, they don’t know how to remove a wheel, let alone replace a punctured tube.

VormWalde says that next to a helmet, the most important protection a cyclist can own is a floor pump. While you’re topping back up to the pressure listed on the sidewall (and you can search online to see what inflation range matches rider weight for the tire you’re riding), he suggests inspecting the entire tire tread for any debris working its way through to the inner tube.

Almost any decent shop, Richardson notes, will also be thrilled to teach you how to remove both the front and back wheels, and lots of shops hold instructional sessions for changing out a tube. REI’s Holte says to learn this at the shop, then go do it again at home. If you can make the procedure rote, you’ll be far less flummoxed when you’re stuck fixing a flat beside a busy roadway.

If you flatted recently and are reading this guide thinking about a replacement tire, Richardson believes you should increase to a higher-volume tire, as long as it will fit. “You want to change a flat as infrequently as possible. A wider tire is generally easier to take off the rim. You just have more meat to grab,” he says.

Until we can travel again, here are 20 stunning photos of trees to make you feel like you’re outside enjoying nature, without leaving your couch.

And, he adds, usually you can safely run a wider tire at a lower pressure. VormWalde believes you should run the same width tire as the bike manufacturer spec’d, but notes that a lot of bike brands, especially on the gravel side, are making room for larger tires. The hack for going bigger is to fit an Allen key between the current tire and the frame. If an 8-millimeter Allen fits in the narrowest spot between the tire and the frame/fender and tire, you have plenty of clearance to at least modestly increase tire width.

Buy for Protection, Not for Low Weight

In my conversation with Richardson, he echoed Specialized’s VormWalde, noting that there’s no perfect tire for every scenario. Tires with higher thread-per-inch (TPI) counts are more supple, offering better handling, but they wear faster. And as we noted in a guide to ebike-specific tires last year, they can also let sealant weep through the sidewall. (We’ll look at the idea of switching to a tubeless tire in the next section of this article.)

Holte, Richardson, and VormWalde agree that the key with ebikes is to buy for protection, and not worry about how much a tire weighs. Heavier is fine; you have an electric bike! In the EU, tires for electric bikes have to pass a regulatory requirement called ECE R75, the minutiae of which works out to a bit of a compromise between laws that also cover mopeds, because electric bikes are frequently lumped in with motor scooters. No such regs exist for bicycle tires sold in the US.

Confused? Don’t be.

Focus instead on buying replacement tires as we’ve already mentioned: for the type of riding you do and your own bike. Also, while some of the EU’s standards center on the extra weight of an electric bike, that’s less of an issue than longer wear life and better puncture protection.

For that reason, Holte mentions the Schwalbe Marathon E-Plus, as does Richardson, for overall toughness. And like Schwalbe, Continental has a full range of ebike-specific tires. Holte likes the Conti Top Contact II, and Continental even makes the Top Contact Winter II, an ebike tire specifically designed to remain flexible and tear-resistant at lower temperatures. And Kenda makes an entire line of eMTB tires designed around the added mileage an electric mountain bike will see.

Not to be outdone, Specialized’s VormWalde mentions his company’s Pathfinder tire.

What all these tires have in common is they’re designed with a textile layer beneath the tread compound. VormWalde explains that as much as you may want an extra rubber sheath to resist punctures (which the Schwalbe Marathon Plus features), he says that “cross-woven cut-resistant textile layers don’t add too much weight.” Unlike adding more rubber, he notes, the tire retains the suppleness that’s necessary to provide decent road feel—what you need to ride confidently and safely.

The Tubeless Gambit

If your bike has a belt drive rather than a traditional chain drivetrain, or uses a rear hub motor, removing the rear wheel can be a giant chore and require carrying numerous tools with you. If that’s your situation, you may be tempted to convert your wheels to tubeless. This is done using a rim tape so the tire can hold air without an inner tube, and a fluid injected inside the cavity to seal any potential punctures. The advantage, in theory, is a more fail-safe system.

A lot of electric MTBs already go this route, and benefit from tubeless for the same reason regular mountain bikes do: You can run lower pressures in a higher-volume tire and get better ground conformity without the potential to pinch flat.

But neither Holte nor VormWalde think it’s worth the effort and added cost of converting any other kind of ebike to tubeless, even if you own a belt-drive or hub-motor bike. Instead, they suggest just getting the toughest tire you can find and running tubes.

Holte mentions the fact that tubeless sealant has to be renewed regularly since iit dries out over the course of a few months—just like a tubed tire needs to be topped off with air from time to time. “If you’re not riding consistently, that’s gonna dry up a bit quicker,” he notes.

Richardson says some cargo bikes spec’d with very fat, higher-volume tires might be very easy to convert to tubeless, and he sees a niche there. But generally he agrees that few of his customers should bother.

VormWalde stresses most strongly that you can avoid the headache of flats without converting to tubeless. “A tube still is a beautiful thing. If it didn’t exist, we would have to invent it, and millions of riders would want one because it is easy to install, very reliable, and easy to replace.”
