Actor Bruce Lee was a martial arts icon — but his day-to-day routine might not be what you’d expect from a revered athlete. And that includes a full-on spaghetti dinner.

In a recent video, YouTuber Will Tennyson followed Bruce Lee’s diet and exercise routines for a day. While Tennyson is no stranger to trying celebrity routines, he says Lee’s regimen is significantly different from his usual celebrity-based challenges, as the martial arts great didn’t follow Western ideals of diet and fitness.

Every morning, Lee started off his day with a jog, which is basically your normal wake up. But then things start to turn for the unexpected. Tennyson sits down to a breakfast of fish and pork liver congee, which is basically a rice-based porridge. While it’s a classic East Asian breakfast, you likely won’t find the dish at your local brunch joint. Tennyson accompanies the dish with Lee’s special tea recipe meant to sustain energy throughout the day and a glass of OJ.

Before hitting the gym, Tennyson makes Bruce Lee’s protein shake, which is full of unique ingredients like powdered milk, wheat germ and raw egg. Thankfully, there’s some banana and peanut butter in there to help the taste, making the final result like a liquid “non-sweet granola bar.” Delicious.

Tennyson then does Lee’s full body workout, which he takes from Lee’s own gym card documented in his handwriting.

“He doesn’t actually lift a lot of weight because he didn’t want to sacrifice speed and flexibility for muscle bulk,” Tennyson notes while breaking down the gym card.

Much of the workout includes intense supersets and cardio with a big focus on arms. By the end of the workout, Tennyson says it hurts to hold up an empty water bottle. Dang.

For lunch, Tennyson digs in to beef, greens and oyster sauce with rice, accompanied by a salad and a thick tea. Once that’s done, it’s time for Tennyson’s beginners nunchuck lesson, which (unfortunately for him) includes some painful slaps to the head.

Before dinner, Tennyson has a juice of carrots and apple, which Lee liked to drink for better nutrient absorption. According to Tennyson, Lee was really into carrots, making his fruit and vegetable juices up to 50 percent carrot in most cases.

Now on to dinner, when Tennyson gets an unexpected treat—a full-blown Italian dish. Yes, apparently Lee liked spaghetti with meat sauce and salad for dinner. But who doesn’t?

“Bruce Lee ate very healthy—most of the time,” Tennyson says in the video. “He still allowed himself to have a ‘cheat meal’ here and there. He did love ice cream. He loved McDonalds. He loved soft drink. He never really had stuff off-limits. He just had stuff in moderation, which is key.”

Tennyson’s overall experience with Lee’s routine was pretty solid. By the end of the experience, the YouTuber and fitness buff even says he’ll likely incorporate elements into his own daily routine.

“As you guys can see, that was not your typical daily diet and training of an athlete,” he says. “It seems like Bruce Lee has a more wholistic approach to health and fitness, and didn’t just look at muscle, but rather the entire body.”
