After I graduated high school, I started moving less, and I ate more junk food. I got married at 19 in 2001 and had six kids in nine years. Back-to-back pregnancies took a toll on the body, and I wasn’t honoring my body during or between my pregnancies. The weight piled on.

After I had my last baby in 2011, I didn’t recover well. Turning 30 the day after I gave birth, I was so tired. My joints hurt all the time, and my body was so inflamed. Turning 30 was a stark reminder that I was not going to bounce back easily, like I did after previous pregnancies. If I wanted to keep up with my kids, I had to make changes or I would just coast downhill into misery.

I lost my mom to breast cancer on January 30, 2016. I was extremely depressed, and when I became pregnant three months later, it was a struggle. I try to run 10 miles a week (if not more). My goal is to run 500 miles by the end of the year, and I have I have lost 122 pounds in less than three years.

Now I find myself single for the first time in awhile, and I'm terrified. tldr: single in my late 20s, worried I won't find anyone, and feel like an outcast from my couple friends. My mom is 65 and still dating! She was happily married to my stepdad for 20 years before he passed from cancer 6 years ago.

As a fat and anxious person, the idea of going to a gym sent me into a panic. Running didn’t seem as intimidating. My ex-husband ran in the military, and I thought I’d give it a try in 2013. The shorter mileage meant that I didn’t have to leave for long periods of time—after all, I had many small people and a nursing baby at the time. But I started running out of a desire to be healthy for them.

Those early runs were simultaneously hard and awesome. The Couch-to-5K program I had downloaded used easy run-walk intervals geared toward beginners, and I think that was key. Finding the time to go run while also supporting my children after a major life change was really hard. I felt a lot of guilt at first: Guilt over the failure of my marriage, guilt for taking time for myself, guilt over having to work.

I slowly learned how to change my relationship with food from something to binge on desperate for comfort, to something that fuels me so I can live my life.

After 18 months of eating better and running, I reached my goal weight of 161 pounds in April 2017.

Since then, I’ve stayed at that weight. I feel amazing, and not just physically. I’m not kidding when I say running saved my life. I’ve always battled depression and anxiety, but after my divorce, I fell into a tailspin of panic attacks, anxiety, nightmares, and worsening depression.

I started counseling and medication to help my brain and give me coping tools to heal from trauma. But it was in the run that I found freedom from the demons chasing me. When I run, my brain is quiet. My brain slows down as my legs move faster. The sun and the air washes away the anxiety. It’s in the run that I feel the strength inside me that’s enabled me to start a new life and rebuild myself after being broken. Running is my safe place. It resets my brain and my body to keep going.

If someone wanted to go on a similar journey, my advice to them would be to start small and simple. Don’t change everything over night. Make a list of things you want to do, be patient, and do them one at a time.

Also, give yourself grace. This isn’t a linear journey. It’s sometimes one step forward and two back, or two forward and one back. But, celebrate every single victory. Big ones, small one, unexpected ones. They’re all worth celebrating.
