Step 1) Cleanse –with a product containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, or benzoyl peroxide (depending on your child’s skin type). This is meant to keep the pores clear and the face soft.
Step 2) Tone – Store-bought toners, which typically contain glycolic acid, will help brighten the skin. They also help remove the top layer of dead skin cells to leave the face clearer and healthier.
Step 3) Exfoliate – A gentle scrub will help remove the majority of dead skin cells, allowing your child’s skincare regime to better penetrate into the lower layers of their skin.
Step 4) Treat – Use a product containing salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or witch hazel to fight off blemishes as they appear. If blemishes persist, you may want to try a product with retinol or alpha hydroxy acids. For dryer climates, there are products containing hyaluronic acid. It’s also a good idea to use moisturizer on top of this step.
Step 5) Protect –and reapply every 2-3 hours during periods of extended sun exposure. For example, make sure your child understands this includes when going out in the car or walking to and from school. Sunscreen with an SPF 15 is fine for casual wear. However, if you plan on swimming or spending more time outdoors, choose a product with SPF 30+.
Update the Routine As Necessary
It’s important to remember that your child’s skin will change over time. Natural fluctuations based on how much they’re eating or what hormones are surging through their body can affect the way it functions. This means that you’ll need to modify this list of steps every few months until your tween’s skin has come into its own. As always, consult your dermatologist.
