Alicia Silverstone Still Co-Sleeps With Her Tween & People Are Losing It

Alicia Silverstone Still Co-Sleeps With Her Tween & People Are Losing It When it comes to parenting, everything is a two-step process. First, you have to make a decision. Then, you have to deal with the backlash from your decision — no matter what it is. Alicia Silverstone is experiencing the mom shaming once again, as she recently revealed she still co-sleeps with her tween son Bear Blu, and people are absolutely losing it over this information. The actress, who shares 11-year-old Bear with ex-husband Christopher Jarecki, told The Ellen Fisher Podcast on Tuesday, “Bear and I still sleep together.” She added, “I don’t really care,” about what possible critics might say.

Now that you have a tween, everything is changing. Their body is changing, their emotions are changing, the way they eat is changing, even the way they sleep is changing! Your tween has entered into a time of life when their skin needs change as well. As your tween enters into the life stage called puberty, it’s important to keep an eye on their skin care routine. This can ensure that she stays healthy and beautiful during this time of transformation into adulthood.

Understanding the Importance of Skincare Routines

Appearance starts with skincare. Just like all things related to our bodies change at puberty, so do our skin’s needs. Skin changes during this time of development because hormones are starting to flow more vigorously through the child. A good skincare routine is, as the name implies, a series of steps you do with your tween to keep their skin healthy and beautiful.

Before the Skincare Routine Begins

Start by taking an inventory of what products you’re currently using on your tweens skin. By doing this, you can see which elements her skin needs more or less of as it changes into adulthood. The following list contains five basic skincare ingredients found in most beauty and skincare routines: moisturizing cream or lotion, exfoliating products, blemish fighting items, lotions that protect against sun damage, and acne fighting items for when blemishes do appear.

After looking at what you currently have available at home, talk to your kids about which one they think they might need more or less of based on how their feels. This will help guide your growing child to understanding which ingredients are most important for his or her skin. For tailored services, be sure to consult your own dermatologist.

Products Designed for Teen and Tween Use

Now that you have an idea of what ingredients you’re using, it’s time to start looking at products your tween can use every day. Look through the products you have available and find one or two that contain these basic ingredients. If one brand doesn’t have all the things you need, try another until you find the one that will work best for your tween.

Once you’ve found a few cosmetic brands your tween likes, show her how to use them daily. The more of a routine you can make this for them now, the better their skin will look and feel as they get older.

Steps to a Basic Skincare Routine

Make sure your child understands that before they begin their skincare routine, they should be prepared. Put on clothing that can get wet until they get used to washing their face without splashing. Something quick, such as a cami is perfect for both morning and nighttime routines. When they are done, they can either get dressed for the day, or they can put on their pajamas for the night.

Step 1) Cleanse – Have her regularly wash her face with a product containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, or benzoyl peroxide (depending on your child’s skin type). This is meant to keep the pores clear and the face soft.

Step 2) Tone – Store-bought toners, which typically contain glycolic acid, will help brighten the skin. They also help remove the top layer of dead skin cells to leave the face clearer and healthier.

Step 3) Exfoliate – A gentle scrub will help remove the majority of dead skin cells, allowing your child’s skincare regime to better penetrate into the lower layers of their skin.

Step 4) Treat – Use a product containing salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or witch hazel to fight off blemishes as they appear. If blemishes persist, you may want to try a product with retinol or alpha hydroxy acids. For dryer climates, there are products containing hyaluronic acid. It’s also a good idea to use moisturizer on top of this step.

Step 5) Protect – Apply sunscreen in the morning and reapply every 2-3 hours during periods of extended sun exposure. For example, make sure your child understands this includes when going out in the car or walking to and from school. Sunscreen with an SPF 15 is fine for casual wear. However, if you plan on swimming or spending more time outdoors, choose a product with SPF 30+.

Update the Routine As Necessary

It’s important to remember that your child’s skin will change over time. Natural fluctuations based on how much they’re eating or what hormones are surging through their body can affect the way it functions. This means that you’ll need to modify this list of steps every few months until your tween’s skin has come into its own. As always, consult your dermatologist.
