Share. Tweet. Pin. Email. We've known for a long time that the light-filled, large apartments of " Friends " would have been pretty much impossible for a gang of struggling twentysomethings. We're fine with that.

The biggest mystery surrounding apartments on Friends was just how the heck they afforded them (the girls’ is a huge, West Village spot and Monica is often unemployed, while Rachel serves coffee for the first few seasons), but one question finally being answered is why the pad was purple .

We've known for a long time that the light-filled, large apartments of "Friends" would have been pretty much impossible for a gang of struggling twentysomethings. We're fine with that.

While we have so many unanswered questions about Friends , queries about the colour of Monica ' s apartment have never been the issue. John Shaffner has explained exactly why the New York flat looked the way it did - and why the walls were such a daring shade of purple - it makes so much

Monica ’ s apartment on Friends has got to be one of the most iconic – and, quite frankly, stunning – fictional TV homes of all time. Speaking to Great Big Story, John Shaffner revealed: “I said, ‘I think we should paint the wall purple ’.

The four-time Emmy winner recalled how he showed the producers a miniature model of the set. When they asked about color, he suggested purple.

"Everybody was really anxious about it (at first)," he said. But they loved it once they saw the final mini-apartment.

And the purpose for the purple? "Color is really important in terms of establishing the show identity," he explained. "When you switched to 'Friends,' you saw that it is purple and you stayed tuned."

And we have to say, it worked, because we still remember those walls 15 years after the show went off the air!

After ten years of being there for us, Friends left our screens in 2004 – leaving a Central Perk shaped hole in our hearts – and we’re still not over it. Yes it may have been 14 years since Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Monica , Phoebe and Joey made their last appearances but it still feels like it was just yesterday.
