Smart Living5 Tips to Keep Your Rings Shining Like New
Your rings, necklaces and other jewelry are an investment in your personal style, so it’s important to take care of them and keep them in their best condition possible. Thankfully, there are plenty of tips out there to help you care for your jewelry and keep it looking shiny and new. Check out the five tips below to learn how to care for your jewelry pieces.
1) Put them in rice
If you've been wearing your ring and it's become a little bit tarnished, one of the simplest ways to restore its shine is by soaking it in rice. Simply put your ring into a bowl of rice and wait overnight. The rice will absorb any residual moisture that may be on the ring, which can cause it to tarnish. In the morning, simply dry off the ring with a soft cloth and polish with your normal jewelry polish. It should look good as new!
2) Avoid Chemicals
As tempting as it may be, avoid any contact with harsh chemicals. Hair products, dishwashing detergents, bleach, disinfectants and solvents should not come in contact with your jewelry at all eg the Moissanite rings. These products will cause the metal to tarnish or the stone to chip or crack. Avoid wearing them in the pool, bathtub or ocean as chlorine and salt water can do significant damage to precious metals and gemstones.
3) Store them properly
Store your jewelry in an airtight container or ziplock bag. This will keep it from getting tarnished and dirty. There are also special containers for storing jewelry that help reduce tarnishing. However, make sure you don't store your jewels near corrosive chemicals or at high temperatures. Don't wear your rings when washing dishes, cooking, cleaning, working out, gardening, etc. Wearing the ring may cause a stone to fall out or scratch the metal. Instead, take off the ring before doing any of these activities so it doesn't get damaged!
4) Clean them yourself
The best way to clean your rings is with a gentle soap and warm water. Soap will get rid of any dirt or grime that's built up on the ring while the warm water helps dissolve the soap. Rinse with cool water, pat dry and put it back on your finger. If you don't want to do this, you can bring your jewelry into a jeweler for cleaning - but please be aware that many jewelers charge for this service! You could also purchase an inexpensive ultrasonic jewelry cleaner which uses ultrasonic sound waves to penetrate through the layers of metal, releasing them from dirt and oil build-up. There are various types of cleaners so check out your options before buying one!
5) Store Them Safely
Always store jewelry away from extreme temperatures, humidity and air pollution in soft containers such as cotton wool and paper towel rolls. It's important not to sleep in your rings as this may cause deformities over time. Also don't get them wet or expose them to chlorine. If you are going to be doing anything outside of the home where you're at risk for getting dirty, take off your rings first!
