If we're being honest here, Idris Elba could show up to a red carpet ceremony draped in a Trader Joe's grocery bag and still look better than I will at my own wedding. It's just a fact of life: Idris is hot and charming and has a good tailor, so whatever he wears is going to look good. At the Golden Globes this year, he took a chance with a printed green suit. Did he pull it off? Course he did. He's Idris.

I'm talking specifically, however, about how he wore the fit on stage during the awards. That is, buttoned and with a silk tie. While walking the red carpet earlier in the night, he went sans button and tie and looked a little...scraggly. Maybe he was hot. Maybe he forgot his tie and some poor publicist had to run to Rodeo Drive to get him one, lest the night forever be known as the one where Idris forgot his tie. Either way, the look didn't last. By the time he got up on stage he was completely suited up.

Idris Elba has stated the “hustle” he was required to do to pay his bills has made him the person he now is – and undoubtedly has led to his street-wise edge. Elba has appeared in a number of blockbusters – Ridley Scott’s critically acclaimed “American Gangster”, Thor and its sequels Thor: The

Pulling off color for a black tie event can be difficult, but Elba went with a jewel tone. Deep greens, blues, and reds always feel more formal than something super bright-a key takeaway if you're ever trying to pull this look off yourself. Also to note, it's easy to overdo both a color and a print, but Elba's jacket was perfectly balanced. The print serves as sort of a textural element rather than something you're supposed to see immediately. And, of course, if you're going for the fully put together look, don't forget your tie.
