Best Dressed — Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton. Michelle Williams seems to always be on the cutting edge of fashion and for her first red carpet of What’s most impressive about Williams’ Louis Vuitton sweetheart column dress is not necessarily its the most beautiful gown at the Emmys , but

We used to think of the Golden Globes as the beginning of awards season, but what if it's the Emmys? Just like back-to-school festivities, people have just had a long and (theoretically) restful summer, they're probably a lot tanner than usual, and they're excited to shake up the class with some brand-new fancy duds. The question is, then, who got an A and who needs improvement? Here are some of our picks.

Best Pink and Red: Mandy Moore in Brandon Maxwell

Mandy Moore posing for a picture: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Kevin Mazur - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

This was the most unexpected trend of the night: By our latest count, five actresses arrived in floaty gowns that fused red and pink fabric, a very on-the-nose valentine to TV. We had a hard time picking one we thought was flawless, but we're giving the win here to Mandy for leaning allll the way into 1980s nighttime soap realness. In this, she could hurl a martini at her enemy, ruin a wedding, or slip it off and step into a bathtub while someone else's husband gawks. When This Is Us ends, maybe she should consider this as a career move.

Emilia Clarke Stepped Out in a Daring Plunge Dress at the 2019 Emmys

Emilia Clarke Stepped Out in a Daring Plunge Dress at the 2019 Emmys Daenerys' last big red carpet!!Clarke is up for a major award tonight: best lead actress in a drama series for her work as Dany in Game of Thrones' final season. Game of Thrones generally has a Best Drama series nomination, and Clarke's castmates Kit Harington, Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau, Peter Dinklage, Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams all have individual nominations too.

From Mandy Moore to Laverne Cox, these stars put together compelling ensembles.

Ella burst onto the scene with "Boo'd Up" and casually won a Grammy for it last night for Best R&B Song. And just in case that all happened too fast for you to catch who she is, Ella hit the red carpet in this enormous confection that is simply impossible to miss: a dream gown for a dream night.

Best Trousers: Kerry Washington in Alexandre Vauthier Couture

It's unusual to wear separates to the Emmys; it's even more unusual to wear a white oxford to an awards show, although Sharon Stone once taught us all that when done correctly, it's unforgettable. And this iteration is so crispy, so sexy, so modern, so damn good.

Best Cast: Schitt's Creek

Daniel Levy, Karen Robinson posing for a photo: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Steve Granitz - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

This is quite possibly just our favorite cast, period, but Schitt's Creek took five long seasons to get Emmy recognition, and we're beyond pleased to see them all sparkling so brightly on the red carpet. All these dishy Canadians in one shot is just another compelling reason to investigate moving there.

30 of America’s Most Popular Grocery Stores

Best Legend: Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Oscar de la Renta

Julia Louis-Dreyfus posing for a picture: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Frazer Harrison - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

She didn't win for Veep—this time, anyway—but Julia is victorious in pretty much every other aspect, including the way she's carrying this sexy gold sequined gown. So she didn't break the all-time performing Emmy record tonight? Big deal. She'll smash it with whatever she does next, and we can't wait.

Best Arthurian Legend: Gwendoline Christie in Gucci

Or should we just call her Guinevere?

Most Welcome New Arrival: Lilly Singh

a woman in a green dress: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Steve Granitz - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

That emerald hue is wonderful on Lilly, who looks faintly like the prom queen of TV we hope she becomes: It's a big deal that a bisexual woman of color is breaking into the traditionally very white and male world of network late-night shows, and hopefully she'll come back in future years as a nominee herself.

Stars Snacked On Mac & Cheese And Tater Tots During Last Night’s Emmy Awards

Stars Snacked On Mac & Cheese And Tater Tots During Last Night’s Emmy Awards Did we mention the open bar? ????But lucky for anyone in attendance, last night's Emmy Awards seemed to have more of a Golden Globes feel to them, which is to say lots of booze and plenty of (hot) food. During E! News' pre-show coverage, host Erin Lim shared some inside scoop on the snack situation during a fan question segment. Per Erin, yes, there is an open bar inside, so guests can sip on champagne, cocktails, etc. during the show.

The Best Red Carpet Looks at the 2019 Emmys . By Rachel Epstein. Sep 22, 2019 . Though the 2019 Emmys will go down without a host this year (honestly, it's probably for the best ), the part of the night that's always a given is celebs ' chic Steve GranitzGetty Images. Rachel Brosnahan. 25 of 77.

Best Departure: Lena Headey

Warrior queen Cersei would rather die than show up anywhere in something this floaty and floral. However—SPOILER—Cersei did in fact die, so we commend Lena for swinging so far in the other direction, neatly reminding us all that she's not actually a cold-hearted snake, even if she played one on TV.

Best Vamp: Natasha Lyonne in Gucci

Natasha has really been leaning into some glitz, and this almost vintage-looking gold Gucci is shimmery and sexy and saucy in a way that her old all-black wardrobe never showcased. Maybe she and Mandy Moore can star in that soap opera together.

Best Pink: Mj Rodriguez in Jason Wu

Mj, of Pose, talked very enthusiastically about wanting her dress to be a sharp, angular, precise pop of color, telling E! that this night represented the first time she'd been truly taken seriously and so she sought a gown that would give that its due. Mission heartily accomplished: She looks fantastic.

The most popular cocktail in every state

The most popular cocktail in every state Brunch cocktails, whiskey sours, and margaritas, oh my. When it comes to Americans' favorite cocktail of choice, it varies by state.

Television’s hottest stars walked the purple carpet for the 2019 Emmy Awards, but which were bestowed the title of fashion’s royal winners? The “Game of Thrones” nominee looks tickled pink in a Louis Vuitton dress and diamond collar necklace while her hubby Joe Jonas is away on tour.

Best Excuse for a Show-Related Pun: Nicole Byer

a person in a yellow dress holding a sign posing for the camera: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Matt Winkelmeyer - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Nicole is perfect in this canary sparkler. We might even go so far as to say she...wait for it, WAIT FOR IT...nailed it.

Slinkiest: Niecy Nash in Custom Christian Siriano

a person posing for the camera: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Kevin Mazur - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

When she was interviewed on the red carpet, Niecy apologized in advance if one of her boobs popped out (it did not). Niecy has never shown up at an event looking less than the bodacious babe she is, and she definitely wasn't going to end the trend this year. Bonus points for that great sparkly headpiece.

Best Pattern: Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton

Michelle Williams posing for a picture: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Steve Granitz - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

This might be a personal best for Michelle Williams, whose partnership with Louis Vuitton has tended toward the twee. The pattern is gorgeous, the cut is simple but stunning. She's never looked better. It's the perfect dress to win in; thank goodness, she did.

Arguably Gutsiest: Kendall Jenner in Richard Quinn

a person with collar shirt: 71st Emmy Awards - Executive Arrivals© Alberto E. Rodriguez - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Executive Arrivals

This red carpet was, all things told, quite pretty, but a great many people played it fairly safe. Not Kendall. This is fascinating and fun and really bold on her—and, not for nothing, probably extremely sweaty in L.A.'s weather conditions on Sunday. A round of applause for trying this—both for pulling it off sartorially, and actually physically pulling it off later. Latex gets sticky.

Gwendoline Christie’s Fashion Statement at the Emmys Has Everyone Talking

Gwendoline Christie’s Fashion Statement at the Emmys Has Everyone Talking Gwendoline Christie is looking like the second coming of Christ on the 2019 Emmy Awards red carpet!Remember how Ariana Grande said that "god is a woman"? Unsurprisingly, your fave songstress was right because god is INDEED a woman, and her name is Gwendoline Christie. Our Gwen showed up in the most regal-looking, pope-inspired ensemble that I have ever seen in my life. Sis is legit serving me everything my Catholic school education taught me about—The Father! The Son! The Holy Spirit! Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! Literally all in one.

From Mandy Moore to Laverne Cox, these stars put together compelling ensembles.

Hatsiest: Billy Porter in Michael Kors Couture

a person wearing a hat: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Jeff Kravitz - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

It's a statement of how very dramatic Billy Porter often looks on a red carpet that our first take on this look—which involves 100,000 crystals!—was, "Oh, sort of understated on Billy tonight." (In our defense, this is a person who was carried into the Met Gala on a golden litter.) The good news is, it proves Billy is just as much a fashion plate when he's "relaxing" as he is when he's got it turned up to 11.

Best Makeunder: Halsey in Rami Kadi

a person wearing a costume: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Kevin Mazur - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

You might look at this and wonder how, exactly, this qualifies as a makeunder, but this is Halsey we're talking about here. She once wore a belt as a shirt, and the last time we saw her in public, she was wearing a pleather loincloth-dress. By those standards this is understated—and by any standards, it's glorious.

Most Conditionally Successful: Zendaya in Vera Wang

Zendaya posing for a picture: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Matt Winkelmeyer - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

We are generally not fans of gowns with this much visible boning—finish your dress!—but we cannot deny that Zendaya still looks stunning in it. She should come with her own "Don't Try This At Home" warning.

Best Message: Laverne Cox in Monsoori and Edie Parker (bag)

a girl in a pink dress: 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals© Frazer Harrison - Getty Images 71st Emmy Awards - Arrivals

We don't love Laverne's ruffled gown—it's sort of overwrought—but her custom Edie Parker bag is exceptional, so who even cares about the dress? On Oct. 8, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in regards to whether LGBTQ workers are protected against workplace discrimination; Laverne's date was Chase Strangio, the ACLU lawyer who will be arguing the case. Let us put to rest once and for all the idea that fashion is synonymous with frivolity: Laverne is using this platform to raise awareness about something essential, and in our book, that makes her best-dressed no matter what she's wearing.

Justin Bieber Is Now the Proud Owner of $25,000 Lavender Dental Grills, if You Can Believe This is not a drill!!!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Charles Dickens' most memorable line had absolutely nothing to do with the fashions of the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, of course, but we couldn't help but recall that phrasing after watching the red carpet for this year's telecast go down.
