“I’m a pretty tough critic of myself and don’t you find that seeing yourself in a monitor every day—doesn’t that mess with your head sometimes?” he asked Hoda Kotb. “Because you’re forced to look in the mirror a lot because there is a monitor under these cameras that we are looking at.”

So, the father-of-one decided to make a change. “This summer, I had a moment where I was like, I really felt like my suits were getting tight and it was beach season and I was wearing like button-downs to the beach and I’m like ‘I’m not this guy, I’m not doing this,’” he said.

Cohen revealed that he decided to stop drinking cocktails on Watch What Happens Live, starting in mid-July. “I lost 12 pounds and I’ve just been really watching what I’m eating,” he said.

Wait, how does cutting out booze help you lose weight?

Cohen is hardly the first person to say they lost weight by either cutting back on alcohol or stopping drinking altogether. Why does this happen?

“Alcohol adds extra calories to your day and, if you cut it out and you’re not replacing those calories with food or other calorie-containing beverages, you’re in a calorie deficit,” explains Jessica Cording, M.S., R.D., author of The Little Book of Game-Changers: 50 Healthy Habits For Managing Stress & Anxiety.

Alcohol can also impact the way you approach food by lowering your inhibitions and causing you to overeat, says Gina Keatley, a C.D.N. practicing in New York City. If you cut out booze, you should also weed out unhealthy eating habits around drinking. (Say, that extra slice of pizza after a fun night out.)

Samuel L. Jackson, Rob Lowe posing for the camera: Some people abstain from alcohol because of serious addiction. Others do it because booze just doesn't jive with their lifestyle. Whatever their reasons, these 40 notable men show that you don't always need a drink to feel good and be the best at what you do.

It’s hard to say exactly how much weight you can expect to lose if you cut out booze or reduce your intake. “It depends on the person, how much they were drinking before, and how much it affected their decision-making around food,” Cording says. But, even if you limit alcohol and don’t change your eating habits, you should expect to at least see the number on the scale move down a little, she says.

LOL, bye.The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share a photograph of Prince George and Princess Charlotte at Kensington Palace this morning. If you want to lose weight, but don’t want to cut out alcohol entirely, Keatley recommends being moderate with how much you’re having. (According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, “moderate” drinking is having up to one drink a day for women and up to two drinks a day for men). It’s also a good idea to stick to light beer or wine, if you like them.

But if you’re really into a particular drink, Cording says it’s okay to keep having it—just be moderate about it. “I’ve never found success with telling someone who really loves a good craft cocktail to switch to vodka soda,” she says. “What does work is encouraging people to have the alcoholic beverage that they most love and to feel satisfied with the least amount of it.”
