I am a secret shorts lover. Men get ridiculed for wearing them all of the time, and I have never quite understood the controversy. Many think shorts on men are infantilizing, sure, but when it gets sweltering in the summer, why should I have to suffer in long pants? I want to free the knee! And thanks to the new WFH lifestyle, I finally can. This summer, I’ve been wearing everything from sleek knee-length shorts to pocketed cargo shorts. (Yes, I love dad-style cargos.) I log onto my daily Zoom meeting looking professional on top but totally comfortable on the bottom.

These $10 Walmart Jeans Went Viral on TikTok — Here’s My Honest Review Never buying expensive jeans again. As *Teen Vogue'*s self-proclaimed TikTok connoisseur, I don't mind scrolling hours on end on the app because it's all in the name of journalism, right? Right. From the fashion brands Gen Z can't get enough of and newfound cult beauty products to breaking down the safety behind the skin exfoliating trend taking over the app and the importance of getting professional advice before cutting your own bangs, there's a lot to unpack from all of the under one-minute videos I watch daily. The latest I wish I had discovered waaay sooner? The $10 Walmart jeans that are actually good great.

The relentless pressure on TikTok ramped up further this week, with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo again claiming user data is sent to TikTok is firmly in the sights of the Trump administration, and they’re not letting up. But now, as TikTok continues to deny U.S. accusations of data mishandling

This includes subversive advertising e.g. having a profile based on a service but not directly advertising the service on the subreddit, hoping to attract views based on profile visits.

It didn’t take long for TikTok to figure my love for shorts out, however. The app’s algorithm—which caters to even your most niche interests—quickly began feeding me loads of shorts content. I began noticing it a few weeks back. I’d be mindlessly scrolling on the app (as one does), and every few posts a Gen Z creator would suddenly pop up and tell me that I need to be wearing a specific style of shorts: five-inch-inseam shorts, to be precise. It’s now become a whole trend on the app, where TikTokers wax poetic about how guys who wear short shorts are infinitely hotter than those who don’t. Many of these videos are set to this trending sound, where it goes from “he has no lips, how will he get a kiss kiss, very ugly, no kiss for him” (played over footage of long shorts) to “oh my god, so handsome” (where our hero has changed into five-inch shorts). A 9-inch or 12-inch inseam? The horror! Forget about freeing the knee—these creators want me to free the whole damn thigh.

This is maybe why cargo shorts exist and why many more men probably stopped wearing shorts The 5. 5 inch inseam shorts trend for all my male counterparts is not something to take lightly. And TikTok is going crazy about guys' thighs. It's clear we're at the precipice of entering a golden era for

After deep-diving into the wide array of shorts content on TikTok, I’ve noticed that creators on the app are fans of the silhouette for a few key reasons. The obvious reason that short shorts are trending for men is that they simply show more leg, and an exposed muscular thigh, like in this video, is enough of a reason for many to encourage dudes wearing them. Styled right, a shorter hemline can also read much more modern and sleek than a sloppy knee-length or Bermuda style. It doesn’t give off a dad-in-a-Disney-movie vibe. Some creators have even gone as far as suggesting brands selling five-inch-inseam shorts, such as this video that references labels such as Outdoor Voices, Patagonia, and Vuori.

But I am here to play devil’s advocate about this whole trend. This five-inch movement is a no from me. One, if you really look closely, many of the shorts in these videos are athletic styles or swim trunks. The shorter, five-inch hemline is much more popular in technical fabrics such as nylon. This limits your outfits drastically, as you will look like you are either going for a run or a swim and thus can’t wear them in professional or formal settings. Two, short shorts are not universally flattering. (Sorry, fellas.) As someone who clocks in at six feet two, I am not a giant, but I am all legs, and wearing mid-thigh shorts makes my giraffe-like gams look even longer and wobblier. I much prefer a just-above-the knee hemline, which marries my upper half to my bottom half. Plus, the runways are on my side. Board-style shorts, my personal favorite, are also just a hell of a lot cooler right now. All of the high-fashion runways are pushing them. So no, TikTok, I will not be succumbing. Instead, I will enjoy my roomy nine-inch inseams. Deal with it!
