“Studio 54 brought a glamour back to New York that we haven't seen since the 60s," Liza Minnelli once said. "It made New York get dressed up again.”

At a time when many of us are pondering whether we'll ever get dressed up and go out again, the Brooklyn Museum has been celebrating the enduring influence of the legendary nightclub with their "Studio 54: Night Magic" exhibit. Curated chronologically, the show traces the evolution of the after-hours institution through photography, fashion, drawings, film, costume illustrations, and fragrance. Studio 54 was, after all, a feast for the senses, and for Jessica Murphy, fragrance culture writer, educator, and manager of visitor experience at the Brooklyn Museum, the olfactory ties were essential to telling the whole, multi-sensorial story.

"People who went to Studio 54 and other New York discos of the era were rejecting the 'natural look' of the previous decade and embracing full makeup, new hairstyles, and evening wear again," explains Murphy of the more-is-more mentality that drove nightclub-goers in crafting their presentation. "Perfume, along with fashion and cosmetics, was one of many ways that people accessorized themselves for nights out. It was—and still is!—an element of style, seduction, and self-expression."

As Murphy recently highlighted in a virtual scent tour of the exhibition, there was a dazzling synergy between the popular scents of the late '70s and the Studio 54 regulars that became their celebrity faces. There was the late actress and model Margaux Hemingway, who was the face of Fabergé's Babe fragrance, which became its highest-selling women's fragrance worldwide, as well as the fashion designers who congregated at Studio 54 and released eponymous fragrances during that era: Halston, Diane von Furstenberg, Stephen Burrows, and Calvin Klein among others. "Tastes in fragrance shift over time, but an evening at Studio 54 seemed to call for something that would make a bold statement," says Murphy.

On that note, both in impact and ubiquity, there was no scent more synonymous with Studio 54 than YSL's iconic, best-selling Opium perfume. The spicy, sensual blend of jasmine, vanilla & myrrh was worn by many of the club's party-goers who relished its sexiness and unapologetic decadence. "I travelled with my toothbrush and Opium 1978," says makeup artist and Studio 54 fixture Sandy Linter of toting her signature scent around while she was living the decade's work-hard-play-hard lifestyle. "The 1970s were an era of heady white floral perfumes, and since flowers like jasmine and tuberose can smell elegant and a little dirty at the same time, those were a good fit for disco nights," adds Murphy.

From its very introduction, YSL's Opium has been steeped in lore. "The celebration for Opium’s American launch was more extravagant than any fragrance-related event that had come before," explains Murphy of the infamous party, which began with a gathering at South Street Seaport, on a tall ship decorated to the nines, continued with a viewing of fireworks over the East River, and ended with a late-night party at (where else but?) Studio 54. "The guests weren’t just beauty and fashion industry types—Diana Vreeland was there, but so were Cher, Grace Jones, and Truman Capote," she adds. The way Murphy sees it, the evening encompassed the spirit of Studio 54 as a whole. "It was over-the-top, boundary-breaking, headline-making, a potent mix of celebrity and fashion and nightlife, says Murphy.

While many of the biggest fragrances of the '70s have been discontinued, Opium, along with its newer sister fragrance Black Opium, continue to capture the imagination of glamorous night dwellers. But at a time when nightlife is all but dead, does a night-out-in-a-bottle still have its place? Murphy says yes. "Studio 54 was a sanctuary for people seeking an escape from the daily turmoil of 1970s New York City," she explains. "We’re seeking sanctuary in a different way right now, and we might be looking for small ways to add variety to our new routines. A new perfume can feel like an olfactory 'change of scene.'"

Whether the mise en scène you want to transport yourself to is a night of glittering debauchery, like, say, Bianca Jagger's birthday bash, YSL's Opium after-party, or something a bit more low-key doesn't matter. "The excitement that club-goers felt, putting together a look and using it to feel like a star for one night, is something we can still take as inspiration," insists Murphy. "We have a much more extensive choice of fragrances now than people did in the 1970s, so there’s really no limit to the ways we can reveal or transform ourselves through fragrance."
