(photo courtesy of Alaska Railroad) For many agents, selling an Alaska trip means booking a cruise. However, a growing number of travelers are choosing to experience the wonders of the 49th state by rail—frequently, though not always, in conjunction with a cruise. It’s easy to do on the Alaska Railroad, the only passenger railroad in south-central Alaska.

The high season for the line is from about May 15 to Sept. 15, a period when it operates seven days a week, offering day trips as well as packages of up to 10 days, said Dale Wade, vice president of marketing and customer service for Alaska Railroad. With a hub in Anchorage, the railroad offers routes that run north to Fairbanks and south through the Chugach Mountains to Seward. The trains travel alongside rushing rivers, through canyons and tunnels and across majestic landscapes.

Plans for high-speed rail in the United States date back to the High Speed Ground Transportation Act of 1965. Various state and federal proposals have followed.

The Denali Star operates on the most popular route, heading north from Anchorage to Denali and Fairbanks; the next most popular is the Coastal Classic, from Anchorage south to Seward. Wade said both “are spectacular in their own right.” Once travelers get to Fairbanks, they can extend their trips above the Arctic Circle and toward Gates of the Arctic National Park; the railroad can handle those arrangements.

The railroad can also handle myriad off-train activities on all its routes—like ziplining, flightseeing, grizzly bear viewing and, yes, golf. There are organized special-event trains in the shoulder and winter seasons, including the Ski Train, the Fair Train (Alaska State Fair), the Great Alaska Beer Train and the Kid’s Halloween Train.

The Best — and Worst — States for a Summer Road Trip

The Best — and Worst — States for a Summer Road Trip Road tripping through the United States is a summertime tradition as old as cars themselves. Americans adore taking road trips through the desert landscapes of the American Southwest, the pine tree lined roads of New England, and stopping at landmarks like Mount Rushmore in the north. But there are a few states that are better than others when it comes to road trips, according to Wallethub, thanks to their lower gas prices, attractions and safety.

Since it is light almost all the time in summer, travelers can sightsee almost 24 hours a day during high season, Wade said. If there is a bear or a moose sighting, he said, engineers will slow down so passengers can take pictures. Passengers may also see caribou, bald eagles, mountain goats and other wildlife.

There are tour guides on board every summer train except the Hurricane Turn. As part of a 25-year-old Onboard Tour Guide Program, guides are high school students who have grown up in Alaska and use a public address system to describe the scenery and talk about the state.

The railroad offers two classes of service: GoldStar and Adventure Class. GoldStar, available on the Denali Star and Coastal Classic routes, offers second-level, glass-dome ceilings; upper-level outdoor viewing platforms, among the only ones of their kind in the world; inclusive dining; a private, full-service dining room; private bar; two complimentary adult beverages; and comfortable forward-facing seats.

Adventure Class is available on every route except the Hurricane Turn, offering access to sit-down dining service (separate from GoldStar) as well as to the Wilderness Café’s lighter, grab-and-go dining options like sandwiches and wraps. GoldStar passengers can also access the Wilderness Café.

Ridership on the railroad surpassed half a million passengers in 2017. An increasing number of them travel in winter, a season that saw a jump of 33 percent in passengers carried last year. Most of those trains depart on weekends, though there might be midweek departures depending on capacity and demand. “Winter is about seeing Alaska in its pristine, serene beauty,” said Wade.

One winter train is the Hurricane Turn, which originates in Talkeetna, a small town north of Anchorage, running 55 miles north to Hurricane Bridge. Passengers can get off to hike, fish, raft or ride a jet boat – then wave at the train on its return to pick them up.

Another winter route is aboard the Aurora Train between Anchorage and Fairbanks, a 12-hour northbound trip on Saturdays with the return trip on Sunday, as well as select mid-week departures. As the name of this train indicates, a major reason for the popularity of winter travel, said Wade, is the possibility (not guaranteed) of seeing the northern lights.

A recent expansion of the Aurora Train offers passengers the option to experience more winter adventures along the Rainbelt, coinciding with popular events, including the famed Iditarod Race. Passengers can also head south from Fairbanks to Denali National Park for a day of snowshoeing and a visit to the Murie Science and Learning Center with a new “Denali in a Day” package.

The railroad caters to a wide variety of passengers, with multigenerational travel becoming increasingly popular, Wade said, adding that empty nesters and retirees are big fans as well. The core demographic is people over 50 with children out of the house and household incomes of around $110,000. Younger people are also drawn to these trips.

A high percentage of customers are cruise passengers on pre- or post-cruise adventures, Wade said. Many book the railroad through the cruise lines and, he said, all of the trains’ schedules interface with those of the ships.

“Our job is to enable passengers to enjoy the beauty of the state’s mountains and waterways in comfort,” Wade said
