Flights Delayed at New York’s LaGuardia Airport After Explosion

Flights Delayed at New York’s LaGuardia Airport After Explosion An explosion at a ConEd plant in Astoria sent a wave of bright blue light flashing across the New York City skyline and disrupted power supply at LaGuardia airport causing delays to some flights. The light could be seen from Manhattan shortly after 9 p.m. following a "brief electrical fire" at a substation in the Northern Queens neighborhood, said Bob McGee, a spokesman for utility Consolidated Edison Inc. Buildings stand as the night sky is illuminated by blue light in New York on Dec. 27. LaGuardia had to switch to backup facilities during the blackout. Power has since been restored but not before Delta Air Lines Inc.

Travelers flying out of LaGuardia airport will be disappointed to know that some flights are grounded due to dangerous winds.

The vicious winds have been attacking the Tri-State area causing trees and power lines to fall. The gusts have reached up to 60 mph and caused traffic jams on Monday morning with outages from downed poles and wires.

Due to the high winds, flights are not taking off or arriving at LaGuardia Airport on time.

On Sunday evening, LaGuardia tweeted that the weather was causing flight disruptions. At 10 a.m. EST, La Guardia tweeted that arrivals were delayed by 2 hours and 58 minutes while departures were delayed 31 to 45 minutes. Airborne arrivals were reportedly delayed by 38 minutes.

There is a one hour and eight-minute delay at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and a 1 hour and 48-minute delay at Philadelphia International Airport due to the weather and wind.

As for Washington Dulles International Airport, flights are not allowed to depart until at or after 11: 15 a.m. EST because of the weather.
