According to AAA, a record-breaking 48.9 million Americans plan to travel on the Fourth of July. With more travelers, experts say drivers could face delays up to four times longer than a normal commute.
“This holiday builds on the strong travel demand seen for Memorial Day, and with schools now out of session across the country, families coast to coast are eager to travel,” said Paula Twidale, vice president of AAA Travel.
In Boston, the worst day for travel is expected to be Friday. The worst time to travel is between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. with delays more than three times longer than a normal day, according to AAA.

With gas prices at a national average of $2.66, experts expect the lower-than-usual price will motivate travelers to take road trips.
“Gas prices are, on average, 17 cents cheaper than Memorial Day weekend, which is welcome news for motorists hitting the roads to celebrate the July Fourth holiday,” AAA gas price expert Jeanette Casselano said. “More so, summer gas prices are poised to continue dropping even lower in coming weeks.”
The holiday may also bring in travelers by plane and train. Boston is the 7th most popular destination for American travelers on Independence Day, based on AAA Travel bookings.
AAA officials said they expect to rescue more than 350,000 drivers on the roads this holiday. They recommend having your car maintenance before heading out on a road trip and to pack a car charger, flashlight with extra batteries, first-aid kit, toolkit, water and snacks.
