First is the resting energy expenditure (or REE), which refers to the calorie that your body uses whenever you’re resting to keep you alive. Therefore, putting fewer calories into your body than it needs to be able to support all of these three components would naturally result in a calorie deficit because there aren’t enough of them in your body. Consistently doing this to your body would then lead to what you’re trying to achieve, which is weight loss. However, you can also achieve calorie deficit by significantly increasing your physical activity levels.

On the other side of the spectrum, providing your body with more calories than it needs to support these three components would result in weight gain. In other words, this is called a calorie surplus.

To ensure fewer calories, you can limit processed foods in your diet, opt for home-cooked meals and to not drink your calories.
