The airplane — named Great Southern Land and painted in the carrier’s recently updated livery — is the first of eight Dreamliners scheduled to be delivered to Qantas by the end of 2018 and will be used on the carrier’s route from Los Angeles to Melbourne, Australia, beginning on Dec. 15, 2017.

A second non-stop Qantas Dreamliner route — from Perth to London (about 17 hours and more than 9,000 miles ) — is slated to begin in March 2018 and will be the first direct air link Australia has ever had with Europe.

Until then, Qantas passengers going from Australia to London must continue to make a stop, in either Singapore or Dubai.

The longer range of the 787 is a clear “game changer” for the geographically challenged carrier, Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said at the ceremony.

Israel's El Al has shared details of its upcoming Boeing 787 - 9 Dreamliners , which are expected to enter commercial service this fall. El Al is expecting to take delivery of its first Boeing 787 - 9 Dreamliner aircraft this August, with commercial service starting in September, according to Reuters.

“Taking delivery of a new type of aircraft is always an important milestone for an airline,” said Joyce. “From the distance it’s able to fly, to the attention to detail we’ve put into the cabin design, it will reshape what people come to expect from international travel.”

Like all 787s, and the 787-8 airplanes Qantas flies with Jetstar, its low-cost Australian subsidiary, Qantas’ first 787-9 is fuel-efficient, with large windows, jet lag-fighting air quality and built-in technology designed to minimize the effects of turbulence.

But because Qantas will be using these longer (by 20 feet) 787-9s for much longer-distance flights, it has made some changes to the layout and design of the cabin.

For starters, Qantas says it will be giving passengers extra room to spread out by providing seating for 236 passengers on each 787-9. (Air New Zealand, a Qantas competitor, shows seating for 302 passengers on its 787-9 seat map).

The Qantas 787-9 cabin has 42 business-class seats, 28 premium-economy seats and 166 economy seats.

An updated version of the Qantas Business Suite has a new privacy screen, a 16-inch personal entertainment touch-screen device, more in-seat charging and a new color palette. These seats all have aisle access and can remain reclined from takeoff through landing.

Premium-economy seats on the Qantas 787-9 are in a 2-3-2 layout and each have five storage areas, a night light, an ergonomically designed pillow that attaches to the seat back, a pop-up foot rest and USB power port. (A standard power plug is shared between two seats).

Economy seats (in a 3-3-3 layout) have built-in mood lighting, 12-inch personal entertainment screens and a handy “foot net” for extra support. At each premium-economy and economy seat there is extra shelf space for personal electronic devices to be used alongside the built-in screens. And both the business-class and economy cabins have self-service refreshment and snack bars for use by passengers during the flight.

In addition to the seating upgrades, for the introduction of its 787-9 aircraft Qantas worked with Australian industrial designer David Caon, Australian chef and Qantas executive chef Neil Perry, and a team from the Sydney University’s Charles Perkins Center on details such as a unique in-flight menu; lighting to complement meals, aid sleep and fight jet lag; and redesigned cutlery, dishware and glassware that is still stylish, but lighter — to help with fuel savings.

“We were given a weight target and exceeded it by 13 or 14 percent, which is hard to do, but will save about half a million dollars of fuel a year, just on cutlery and crockery,” Caon told Today in the Sky. “We designed what we wanted aesthetically and then worked with chef Neil Perry and the experts at Noritake, who have been making the crockery for Qantas for more than 60 years.”

While Qantas passengers and executives are excited about the carrier’s first 787, many of the airline’s crew members are too.

“I’ve dreamt about this particular airplane for a long time because I perceive 787s as the future of flying,” said Captain Lisa Norman, the lead pilot on the crew taking Qantas’ first 787 from the Boeing factory in Everett to Sydney (with a stop in Honolulu).

“I have to admit I was a little disappointed when Qantas put the first 787-8s into Jetstar colors,” said Norman. “But now that the Qantas airline group has changed its profitability, it means we can put these in the [Qantas] red and white colors.”

Qantas has big plans for its 787s and for future routes.

Qantas plans to replace its older 747-400 airplanes with the eight 787-9 Dreamliners it is scheduled to receive by the end of 2018.

The first four will fly on the Melbourne-Los Angeles and the Perth-London routes; the other four 787-9 aircraft will be based in Brisbane, with routes not yet announced.

Qantas also has 45 options and purchase rights for additional 787s through the mid-2020s, but has not yet decided on these additional aircraft. “We deliberately maintain some flexibility with our fleet planning so that we can respond to market conditions,” the airline said in a statement.

Still, Qantas has announced that it will recruit at least 170 new pilots in the next two years, most of whom will train as 787-9 second officers, and that it is investing $23 million in a 787 simulator to be located in Sydney.

Going forward, as part of a challenge dubbed “Project Sunrise,” Qantas has asked both Boeing and Airbus to design an airplane that would be capable of flying non-stop from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to London, and from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to New York, by 2020.

“That would open up everything in the U.S. directly from the east coast [of Australia]. We could do Chicago and Washington, D.C.” Qantas CEO Alan Joyce told Today in the Sky. “I wrote to the CEO of both manufacturers and both responded very positively,” said Joyce, who noted that Airbus and Boeing each have aircraft that can do it, “but they’re not quite there.”
