He approached Roby, grabbed her by the neck and pulled her in for a conversation, Assistant State's Attorney Maria McCarthy told the court. Roby had an active order of protection against Washington, who was barred from contacting her or her two children, McCarthy added.

Roby and a witness then left the bar and drove away, with Washington captured on surveillance video circling the parking lot in another vehicle waiting for Roby and the witness to drive away, McCarthy said.

Washington's vehicle, registered to the mother of one of his other children, followed the car Roby was in to a BP gas station near 167th Street and Pulaski Road in Markham. After pulling up beside Roby's vehicle, Washington rolled down his window and said, "Y'all doing too much. Y'all gonna get f-d up," McCarthy said.

Asked by whom, Roby told the dispatcher "my ex-husband," McCarthy said.

Hours later, Washington contacted a family friend who was watching the two children and told them to drop them off at his mother's home in Harvey, authorities said. Washington picked up the children and took them to an apartment building in Hammond, Ind. The Amber Alert was issued that evening and an arrest warrant for Washington was issued. The next day, the children were recovered unharmed and Washington was arrested in Chicago Heights.

Prosecutors said multiple surveillance videos and a red light camera captured Washington either interacting with or following Roby and the witness throughout the night. Washington's cellphone also "pinged" a cell tower in the area of the shooting at the same approximate time.

Washington's attorney, Frank Kostouros, denied the murder charges against his client, saying he hadn't seen any of the evidence that prosecutors alleged.

Kostouros also denied that Washington abducted the children, saying his client had parental and visitation rights for both children. "They plastered his picture all over the press, all over the TV, all over Facebook, all over Twitter, anywhere you look you saw a picture of Lynn Washington for some Amber Alert for kids that were already in his custody. So that makes no sense," Kostouros told reporters after the hearing.

The attorney further added that the Amber Alert may have tainted the subsequent police lineup and investigation involving his client.

In denying Washington bail, Judge Lyke lamented how Roby had received a protective order against her abuser, adding, "everything she did right failed." The judge allowed the $1 million bond issued with the arrest warrant to stand, in addition to approving a violation of bail bond request related to a pending drug case and his own bail denial. Added the judge: "I wish I could set (bond) at a billion dollars, but I can't."

Pastor Donovan Price offered up a prayer at the vigil on behalf of Roby's family. "Dear Lord, we thank you for the opportunity to come together, but we wish we didn't have to come together for this reason," he said.

About 50 people gathered to remember Roby and release dozens of balloons.

Price, who works as a victims advocate for Together Chicago, said the balloons symbolized messages of love and happiness.

Mourners also signed a large memorial card filled with pictures of Roby to give to the family.

"Domestic violence is real," said Roby's cousin Cynthia Faulkner at the vigil. "This could've been me 30 years ago. She did the best she could. Women don't have a voice when someone is beating you. ... It's not easy to get away from that. She tried."
