A 32-year-old murder case has been solved after the suspect turned himself in because he wanted to 'right the wrong that he had done.'

Glenn Adams, 58, has now been  charged with first-degree murder and robbery.

The charges came after he walked into the Cowlitz County Hall of Justice in Kelso, Washington State to confess to the murder of Russell Haines in 1986.

Haines had been found strangled in his hotel room in what officials long suspected was an ambush and robbery.

Adams had been living at the Oregon Way Hotel which was only occupied by men as a kind of temporary shelter for those with low incomes - but there were no suspects or witnesses to his killing. 

Adams told police he needed cash and knew Haines kept large amounts on him.

One day, Adams waited for Haines to return home from the supermarket.  Haines then put him in a chokehold causing him to blackout.  

When Haines finally woke up  Adams told police he tied a cloth around his neck and strangled him, making off with $400 in cash.

'Thirty years in the making, it got solved relatively easily,' Sgt. Chris Blanchard, a spokesperson for Longview Police Department, told KATU

'We didn't have any suspects that had sufficient evidence to charge at that point. The case was cold for the last 30 years.'

Adams is currently homeless and flips around between living in California, Oregon and Washington.

He had attempted to come clean about his crimes last July when he went to the police in Santa Barbara, California, but he ended up backing out and left the police station before officers could interview him.

Officers then decided to reopen the Haines case after hearing of the strange request.

Upon learning of this incident, Blanchard explained how cops reopened the case. 

Police interviewed him on an unrelated matter and he revealed specific details about the murder but didn't yet feel ready to make a full confession.

All that changed on Friday when he finally decided to come clear about the crime he committed and finally confessed.

'He just wants to right the wrong that he has done,' Blanchard said.

Adams says he intends to plead guilty when he appears in court on Monday.
