New York Tackled Subway Crime. But Is It Starting to Come Back?

New York Tackled Subway Crime. But Is It Starting to Come Back? In January, a sleeping rider was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver on New York City’s subway. A month before that, a police officer fended off five homeless men who attacked him on a train platform. And on Sunday afternoon, a man was fatally shot at a subway station in Queens, the first murder on the system in more than a year. The subway has come a long way since the dark days of the 1980s and 1990s when violence was rampant and riders felt constant dread. The system has become very safe, with just one murder on the subway last year compared with 26 in 1990.

Police on Tuesday released an image of a new suspect they say took part in the MS-13 subway brawl that ended with the shooting death of a 20-year-old man on the platform.

One suspect, Ramiro Gutierrez, 26, has already been arrested and accused of shooting Abel Mosso, 20, to death as stunned straphangers scrambling for safety. Authorities say he is an MS-13 member.

President Trump brought up the shooting during his State of the Union speech last week, saying it helped justify his proposals for getting tougher on immigration, including his controversial call for a border wall. Gutierrez is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador.

Cops believe the new suspect, believed to be in his 20s, took part in the brawl on the Manhattan-bound No. 7 train as it pulled into the 90th St. station in Jackson Heights that lead up to the shooting about 12:45 p.m. Feb. 3.

The fight spilled onto the platform when the doors opened, as one rider started recording it with his cell phone camera. The shocking video of the brawl, where gunshots are heard at the end, went viral.

During the fight Mosso pulled a gun but Gutierrez wrestled it away from him, cops believe. Gutierrez fired at least five shots into Mosso’s face from close range, police said. He died at the scene.

The gunman ran off but Gutierrez was caught on Feb. 4 and charged with murder, gang assault and weapons possession.

Gutierrez has 12 prior arrests, cops said. In December he was named in an indictment along with 12 other MS-13 members. Gutierrez was charged with conspiracy to commit a burglary and drug possession and freed on $2,500 bail.

Mosso was a member of the 18th St. Gang, a rival of MS-13, officials said. He had seven prior arrests. His family is disputing police accounts, claiming the victim never had the gun he was ultimately shot with.

The new suspect is described as Hispanic and between 20 and 25. He was wearing a dark “New York” hat, dark clothing and white sneakers.

Anyone with information regarding this man’s whereabouts is urged to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
