Two Madison students told the Express-News on Friday the school had a culture of physical fights, a characterization Zimmerman disputed in his letter.

“The recent news article gives the impression that physical altercations on the Madison campus have become so common that students see them as part of daily life,” he said. “I would argue that while we do have our situations on the Madison campus, they are limited to a small number of our actual student body of over 3000 students. I hope that recent events help to enforce the idea with our students that violence is not the answer to dealing with arguments or disagreements.”

Records from the Texas Education Agency show Madison High School had fewer than 10 fights reported in the 2017-2018 school year. An exact number is not available due to student privacy regulations.

Zimmerman also said administrators have handled fights “quickly and fairly.” He highlighted the school’s positive qualities, including its well-reputed agriculture program and students who have won culinary, fine arts and athletic honors.

Zimmerman has been Madison’s principal for two years. He invited parents to contact him via email or phone with questions, comments or concerns.
