“Just go, just go,” Williams told Urton, according to his testimony Monday in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.

But the 44-year-old Urton said he had to stop, “because of the kid,” Williams said.

Then a series of events unfolded that Hamilton County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Peck compared to a nightmare.

Baber is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Jamie Urton in 2017, after Urton's car struck and injured a young boy.

The driver’s side door opened, and the 4-year-old boy’s father, Jamall Killings, began beating Urton. Killings did that, Peck said, before checking on his son.

Urton kept telling the attacker, “It’s an accident,” Williams testified.

Killings told Urton to get out of the Chevrolet Malibu, Williams said, even as he was throwing punches. At least two other men surrounded the car.

Williams tried to call 911, but wasn’t able to. He said at one point he stood between Urton and Killings, so Killings would stop the attack.

Williams, who is legally blind, said he was standing near the back of the car when he heard multiple gunshots. He didn’t see who fired the gunshots, but said he saw “an arm shooting into the car” as someone walked by quickly.

Peck said 27-year-old Deonte Baber was the shooter.

Opening statements and testimony began Monday in Baber’s murder trial. A jury was selected last week.

At least five shots were fired, prosecutors said. One struck Urton’s left thigh, and he bled to death.

Baber’s attorney, Bernard Mundy, told jurors that Baber and Killings don’t know each other. Mundy said evidence points to Killings, a convicted heroin dealer, being the shooter.

Mundy said a woman drove Killings and his son to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. While in the car, Killings made a 911 call and then didn’t hang up, so what he said was recorded.

Among the statements in the 911 call, the man believed to be Killings told the boy: “I took care of dude. I killed him. He’s dead. He dead. The dude that hit you by the car? He dead. I killed him. I’m serious, he dead.”

“Mr. Baber was not on Kenton Street when Killings and his friends attacked Mr. Urton,” Mundy said.

In fact, Mundy said gunpowder residue was found on Killings’ hand.

At a news conference after the incident, Prosecutor Joe Deters said the shooter had told Williams, "get out of here, you're black," indicating a racial motivation.

But according to Williams' testimony Monday, the context was different. After the shooting, as he was still trying to call 911, a bystander said to Wiliams, "You better go, Old School, because you're black."

Williams said he backed up and stood behind some cars down the street.

Testimony in the trial is scheduled to resume Tuesday before Judge Patrick Foley.

Among the evidence, Peck told jurors, is a security video that shows the homicide. Killings, he said, had stepped back and was inches away from the shooter.

Peck said the evidence, which includes Facebook photos, “will show that it was none other than Deonte Baber…who ran up and executed Jamie Urton on this day.”
