DNA Evidence Leads to Arrest in Brutal Sexual Assault of 14-Year-Old Girl at Santa Ana Park: Police May 08--Police have arrested a man in connection with the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl at a Santa Ana park last year after DNA evidence recently tied him to the brutal attack, police said Wednesday. The suspect, 37-year-old Cornelio Chairez-Velasquez, was already in custody after allegedly tried to sexual assault and strangle a woman at a motel this past January, according to a Santa Ana Police Department news release. Using DNA evidence, police were able to link Chairez-Velasquez to a vicious assault on a teenage girl at Cabrillo Park back on November 24, 2018, police said. The girl had gone to the park, located at 1820 E. Fruit St.

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) – A person of interest was arrested after 63-year-old Rosa Manjarrez De Hernandez was beaten and killed in Long Beach by a man who assaulted her using a rental scooter Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Officers responded about 12:30 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 6400 block of North Obispo Avenue, according to Long Beach Police spokesperson Shaunna Dandoy.

Rosa Manjarrez De Hernandez was beaten and killed in Long Beach by a man who assaulted her using a rental scooter .

Manjarrez De Hernandez was walking eastbound towards Obispo and 64th Street when a man ran up and began assaulting her, Dandoy said.

Police in Long Beach are looking for a person who beat a woman to death using a scooter Monday afternoon. The incident was reported about The attacker then ran way from the scene and was last seen heading west. Long Beach firefighters responded and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

A bystander tried to intervene, at which point the suspect grabbed a scooter and used it to continue attacking Manjarrez De Hernandez.

Fire officials pronounced Manjarrez De Hernandez dead at the scene.

Abel Angulo, a relative of Manjarrez De Hernandez, told CBSLA’s Rachel Kim that she had walked over to their house to drop off a gift for his mom but when no one answered, Manjarrez De Hernandez started to walk away. As she walked down the street, that’s when the attack happened.

“My mom broke down in tears because we saw her on Saturday because she came for a party of ours,” said Angulo.

Neighbor Robin Fagan says she saw Manjarrez De Hernandez on the grass when she came home from work. She told CBSLA that police took their security video, which caught the attack.

“They saw him socking on her, pushed her down, kicking on her, and then she fell down. And then he went and got the scooter and started beating her on the head with the scooter,” recalled Fagan.

The scooter was described as a Bird electric rental scooter.

In a statement released to CBSLA, a Bird spokeperson said: “We are deeply saddened by this act of violence and our hearts and thoughts go out to the victim and her family. We will work with local law enforcement to help with the investigation into this tragedy.”

Homicide detectives were investigating the fatal assault.
