A Scottsdale woman who told officers that she smothered her mother with a pillow had contemplated killing the woman for the past couple of years, according to Maricopa County court documents released Tuesday.

After she finally did so around 2 p.m. Monday, the woman walked to a convenience store and bought two bottles of liquor — one for herself and one for her mother — placing a bottle of gin on the dead woman's body, the records state.

Documents say Holly Brennan, 46, told police she had threatened to kill her mother, 79-year-old Sharon Simmons, via a Facebook post in 2017 and was arrested for making the threat. Brennan said she once again considered killing her mother in December 2018, which led to her seeking treatment, according to the documents, which include a probable cause statement.

The documents submitted after Monday's arrest say Brennan used her neighbor's cellphone to call police twice about 2 p.m.

Brennan told a Scottsdale police dispatcher, "My name is Holly, and I need police here," the first time, before calling them back to say, "I killed my mom."

When police asked Brennan how she killed her mother, Brennan replied, "I smothered her."

Documents say officers checked the apartment near the 6500 block of East Osborn Road and found an "obviously deceased" Simmons on a bed with a pillow partially covering her face.

"Initially I said, 'Hey, how're you doing?' when this lady (a neighbor) was dialing the phone for (Brennan)," Bennett told The Arizona Republic. "She just looked at me like this deer in the headlights look — like I had three heads."

Bennett said he opened his apartment door about 10 minutes later after hearing noises and saw a group of officers pounding on Brennan's apartment door.

"She admitted it right there," Bennett said, recalling what he heard her say. "She says, 'I did it. I smothered her with a pillow.'"

Bennett said Simmons had lived at the apartment complex for about a year and Brennan moved in with her several months ago.

James Bristow, who lived in an apartment above Bennett, said he often saw Brennan and Simmons smoking together on their outdoor patio.

Ashtrays filled with cigarette butts could still be seen on the table Tuesday morning.

Ross Blaisdell, a resident who lived a few doors down from Simmons and Brennan, echoed the sentiment that the older woman was friendly while the latter was not.

"The mother was great," Blaisdell said. "She was always nice to us. She was always stopping (by), saying 'hi' and petting the dogs."
