Over 160 New York firefighters have knocked down a 5-alarm blaze inside a Bronx apartment that has left at least 12 people The fire , which spread floor by floor, came under control within hours. FDNY initially reported 15 serious injuries , and local media has reported at least 12 critically injured .

At least 12 people were killed when a fire fueled by gusty winds tore through a century-old apartment building in the Bronx on a frigid Thursday night, New York City officials said. It was the deadliest fire in the city in more than a quarter-century.

May 17--UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, the Bronx — At least four people were injured after a fire broke out at a Bronx apartment early Friday.

Emergency crews responded to the blaze at an apartment in the vicinity of West 183rd Street and Davidson Avenue shortly before 3 a.m.

Three residents and one police officer suffered injuries for smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

All were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, fire officials said.

A man shot and killed by Houston police officers Friday night after his alleged attempt to break into an apartment has been identified. Carlvon Mayo, 35, was killed at an apartment complex at 5901 Selinsky Road after police say he threatened them with a weapon. He was identified Sunday by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. He was confronted by two officers who opened fire after he refused to put down the weapon. He died on the balcony of the apartment, according to medical examiner officials.
