An attorney for a North Carolina man serving a life sentence for murder says false testimony sent her client to prison.

News outlets report attorney and Duke University law professor Theresa Newman made her argument Friday during an evidentiary hearing for 42-year-old Montoyae "Dontae" Sharpe, who has insisted that he didn't kill 33-year-old George Radcliffe in Greenville during a drug buy in 1994.

Newman said the state's chief witness, a 14-year-old girl, lied during Sharpe's trial. Two months after the trial, the teen recanted her testimony, saying she came upon the murder after it happened. A judge later ruled that the girl made up her recanting.

LOS ANGELES – A federal criminal defense attorney was sentenced last Thursday to seven years in federal prison for his conviction on racketeering and money laundering offenses committed on behalf of 18th Street gang members from Los Angeles which included Mexican Mafia members.
